Torn ligament dashed NFL hopes but he played last year with Italian Football League

If Kevin Grayson had not torn a ligament and missed being drafted by the NFL, he might very well have become that US football league's first openly gay player.

Instead, the former star wide receiver for the University of Richmond (2008-2011) played for the Parma Panthers in Italian Football League last season where he was MVP.

Either way, he is now out and proud.

Grayson says he wants other athletes to know 'just because you're gay doesn't mean you can't be the athlete you want to be. Doesn't mean you can't be a star.'

Davidson discovered that she is one link in four generations of women in her family who befriend gay men and her film explores these heartwarming friendships and tests out some theories on what is the source of this special relationship.

We look at Mexico fighting homophobic hate speech and the Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar who had an apparent anti-gay slur on his eye black

Homophobic epithets are so pervasive across the globe that most heterosexual people are sadly unaware of the psychological and physical toil they have on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. Too often and cavalierly these epithets go either unchecked or unchallenged as hate speech.

Mexico, however, has stepped forward to define and reduce homophobic hate speech. Two commonly used words – ‘punal’ and ‘maricones’ are the main targets. Both words closely translate as ‘faggot’.

Both newspapers are based in the state of Puebla.
