Gay ice skater Johnny Weir has announced his retirement today (23 October).
Speaking on the NBC’s Today show, he announced he had officially retired from competitive skating and will not participate in the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
‘I got old,’ the 29-year-old offered as an explanation.
But he will also be joining NBC as an ‘expert figure skating analyst’ – commentating on the Winter Games.
When asked about Weir supporting the Olympics in the light of Russia’s gay propaganda laws, he said he will still speak out and risk arrest.
