A team of Gay Football Supporters Network soccer players faced off against a squad of House of Commons MPs in a bid to promote equality in sport

A lineup made up of some of the best players in gay and gay-friendly soccer in the UK has triumphed over a team of members of parliament.

The friendly match was held on Tuesday morning (19 March) in London, organized on the one-year anniversary of the Football Association launching their anti-homophobia campaign 'Opening Doors and Joining In'.

The Gay Football Supporters Network (GFSN) squad, who wore Stonewall ‘Some People Are Gay. Get Over It!’ t-shirts, won 3-1, leading the game early in the first half.

Roy Hodgson, manager of the English national football team, has supported the Football v Homophobia campaign

The England football club manager has come out against homophobia in the sport.

Roy Hodgson was speaking to support the Football v Homophobia community campaign in 2013.

‘I’ve been lucky enough to manage clubs and countries across the globe,’ said Hodgson, who has taken charge of top teams like Inter Milan and Switzerland in his 40 year career.

American international and ex Leeds United football star Robbie Rogers says he’s gay, coming out after 25 years, and quitting soccer

American international and former British Leeds United football midfielder Robbie Rogers has come out as gay.

The 25-year-old told fans he no longer wants to keep his sexuality a secret.

He added he ‘couldn’t be happier’ with his decision.

He’s the highest profile footballer to come out in Britain’s national game since Justin Fashanu in 1990. He committed suicide in 1998.

Writing on his blog Rogers said he had feared coming out as gay would get in the way of his dreams.

Football star Le Saux to debate homophobia in sport alongside rugby hero Ben Cohen and NFA giant John Amaechi at Britain’s Student Pride

Chelsea and England soccer legend Graeme Le Saux is to be a star player for the fight against homophobia in sport by joining with Student Pride.

The 44-year-old has been the victim of anti-gay abuse from other football players and fans before, despite being married with two kids.

Now he’s going to score a goal for gays by joining the Student Pride panel debate on homophobia in sport on 1 March in Brighton, south east England.

A Russian footballer has denied he is gay after pictures of him kissing, cuddling and sharing a bath with a male friend went viral.

When Gay Star News reported the pictures back in December, social networks were set alight by the idea two top-level professional footballers could be gay.

West Ham United winger Matt Jarvis has become only the third pro-footballer to appear on the cover of Attitude magazine and says he is sure that there are players who are gay and when they come out it won’t be a shock

West Ham United’s Matt Jarvis has become only the third professional footballer to appear on the cover of Attitude magazine.

David Beckham was the first professional player to do so in 2002, followed by Freddie Ljungberg in 2006.

In its January issue, Jarvis tells the magazine that today’s football community is not homophobic and would accept gay professional players.

When asked if players should come out, Jarvis told Attitude, ‘Yeah, of course.’

Two top-level football players are being accused of being gay after 'intimate' holiday pictures have emerged

Two top-level Russian footballers have sparked outrage after a series of 'gay' holiday pictures have emerged.

Pavel Mamayev, 24, a midfielder for CSKA Moscow, and Alexander Kokorin, 21, a striker from FC Dynamo Moscow, are believed to be in a relationship after ‘intimate’ photographs of them were posted on the internet.

On VK, an Eastern-European social network similar to Facebook, Kokorin posted one of the pictures, saying ‘I love him’.

Other snaps include the two hugging, sharing dinner, going to a basketball game, and having a bath together.

Former Sunderland player Kieron Brady looks forward to the day when gay and bi footballers can be open about their sexuality

Former professional football player, Kieron Brady, has become a patron of Sunderland Pride in a bid to show the red card to homophobia.

Brady, 41, was a Midfielder for Sunderland Associated Football Club in north east England from 1989 to 1993 – the soccer team known locally as the Black Cats.

The Sunderland Echo reports he has now become a patron of the local LGBT pride celebration.

Britain's Football Association says action plan to tackle homophobia should give gay players confidence to be open about their sexuality

Britain's Football Association is urging gay players to come out, saying they shouldn't be afraid to be open about their sexuality.

FA chairman David Bernstein said the governing body's action plan to tackle homophobia in the sport means players should have the confidence to be openly gay.

UK clubs now face sanctions if they fail to deal with discrimination against players, coaches or fans.

The FA Board plans also include induction days for foreign players on Britain's cultural values.

British footballer Joey Barton has threatened to sue a tabloid newspaper which suggested he come out as gay.

The Daily Mail article refers to comments made by Manchester United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard who said the sport needed a 'gay hero'.

Spanish player Suso could be in trouble with the FA and Liverpool FC

A Liverpool FC football player has likened being gay to mental problems in a remark on Twitter.

Suso (real name Jesús Joaquín Fernández Sáez de la Torre) posted a picture of fellow team mate Jose Enrique getting his teeth whitened, with the comment: ‘What f*** is he doing?... This guy is gay. He has some mental problems. He does everything except play football.’

The 19-year-old Spaniard has since deleted the tweet, and uploaded it with a different comment saying ‘I dunno what to say…’

Former pro and manager Gareth Southgate says if a gay player did come out, the problem would be the fans

A former England international and manager has said players would accept a gay teammate in the changing room.

Gareth Southgate claims the real problem is the fans that would not be tolerant towards openly gay footballers.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: ‘I’m sure there might be some reaction from crowds, but within dressing rooms I think it would be accepted.’

Stonewall says the authorities must work to create an environment where a gay player feels able to come out

Gay rights campaigners are urging the UK’s Football Association to get tough on anti-gay hate in the sport.

Stonewall is working with the FA on initiatives to tackle the issue, but they say it is up to the authorities to create an environment in which players are not fearful about the consequences of coming out.

‘Anti-gay abuse is all too common on both terraces and pitches. This abuse almost always goes unchallenged,' Chief Executive Ben Summerskill said.

The UK government is calling homophobia the biggest problem in football compared to other forms of discrimination.

In a report released today (19 September), the Culture, Media and Sport Committee have revealed their latest findings on racism and homophobia in the sport.

Recent research has found 25% of fans think football is homophobic while 10% think football is racist.

About 14% of recent match attendees also reported hearing homophobic abuse.

Kick It Out ambassador Clarke Carlisle has promised the first English footballer to come out will have support

The chairman of the UK Professional Footballers’ Association believes a player will come out as gay soon.

In an interview with the Gay Football Supporter's Network, soccer player Clarke Carlisle says he has spoken with eight gay footballers and has assured them of PFA support if they decided to make their sexuality public.

Although the British trade union head refused to give a time frame, or hint to their identities, he said the first footballer to do so would become an instant trailblazer.

German chancellor Angela Merkel is telling gay footballers they should have no fear of revealing their sexuality.

The chair of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) has revealed he has had recent conversations with eight top players about coming out as gay.

But Clarke Carlisle, who is a soccer star himself, says none of them followed through despite considering it.

Port Talbot Town FC midfielder Daniel Thomas released on bail pending further investigation into alleged homophobic Twitter message about Olympic divers

Welsh footballer Daniel Thomas has been arrested after allegedly tweeting homophobic abuse about British Olympic divers Tom Daley and Peter Waterfield.

It follows his suspension from Port Talbot Town FC and an internal investigation into whether the player sent the offensive tweet, which said the Olympians can ‘go and bum each other’ as a consolation to missing out on a medal in Monday’s 10-meter platform event in London.

Police detectives are investigating the death of a man, found in London’s biggest gay bathhouse today

A man has been found dead in London’s largest gay bathhouse sauna, Chariots Roman Spa.

Police and ambulance paramedics were called today (11 July) to the venue in Fairchild Street, in the area of the British capital referred to interchangably as Shoreditch or as Liverpool Street after its main train station.

The man, who has not been identified was found deceased in the venue. Detectives from the London borough of Hackney are treating his death as suspicious and are investigating.

A post-mortem will be held tomorrow.

Gay Footballers Supporters Network 'really disappointed' with comment

Justin Fashanu had played for a variety of clubs between 1978 and 1997 and later in his career, came out as a gay man and remains the only active English footballer to ever do so publicly.

He killed himself at the age of 37 after moving to the US and being accused of sexual assault by a 17 year old male. Fashanu wrote in his suicide not that the sex was consensual.
