Gay icon Barbra Streisand to perform at Academy Awards for first time since 1977

Will be only her second singing performance at Oscars

Barbra Streisand will be singing at this year's Academy Awards.

The Oscars, being produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, will feature a tribute to movie musicals.

They said in a statement to ABC News Wednesday (30 January): 'In an evening that celebrates the artistry of movies and music, how could the telecast be complete without Barbra Streisand? We are honored that she has agreed to do a very special performance.'

She is, at the same time, one of the most straight American celebrities and one of the most powerful gay icons. Barbra Streisand turns 70 today. And millions of fans are celebrating the event.

‘Hello gorgeous’ are the first words pronounced by Streisand in the romantic musical film Funny Girl (1968). After winning the Academy Award for Best Actress, Streisand’s first comment when handed the Oscar statuette was ‘Hello, gorgeous'.
