The gay sporting star appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show to talk about his life and new autobiography. Ross, who has a gay daughter, personally thanked Thomas for being so open about his sexuality

Gareth Thomas, the former rugby player who came out in 2009, has just published his autobiography, Proud.

On Saturday night he appeared on the Jonathan Ross Show on British's ITV channel, to talk about his career and his previous struggles with his sexuality.

Thomas enjoyed a phenomenal rugby career as a player, and was, until September 2011, the most capped Welsh rugby union player, with 100 appearances for his country.

Retired gay rugby star Gareth Thomas recalls in a new book how he planned to kill himself when his wife of five years left him.

Thomas confessed to then wife Jemma in 2006 that he is gay. She eventually left him and when she did, he recalls in his new memoir, Proud, how he planned to drown himself in their swimming pool.

He was going to do so dressed in his best Welsh Rugby Union issued suit.

'A form of madness gripped me that first night after Jemma left,' he writes.

The National Gay and Lesbian sports hall of fame in the US has announced a new crop of inductees, and British diving champ Tom Daley is one of them

The National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame in the US has announced British Olympic diver Tom Daley as one of their 2014 inductees.

Other athletes named on the list alongside Daley are retired NBA player John Amaechi, retired rugby player Gareth Thomas and mixed martial artist Fallon Fox.

The hall of fame aims to ‘recognize both individuals and organizations whose achievements and efforts have enhanced sports and athletics for the LGBT community.

Soccer’s Graeme Le Saux, rugby’s Ben Cohen and basketball’s John Amaechi call for more action to fight homophobia in sports

Gay-friendly British rugby star Ben Cohen has called on sporting authorities to do more to tackle homophobia.

He was speaking at a debate at Britain’s National Student Pride today (2 March).

The panel session on homophobia in sport also featured former Premiership footballer Graeme Le Saux who explained how he became the victim of homophobia in soccer, despite being straight.

Cohen is a British former rugby star who now has his own brand of underwear and campaigns to beat homophobic bullying.

A poll of professional soccer players in the UK has found three in five believe an openly gay footballer would not be outcast

Most pro football players would welcome a gay teammate and some say the first soccer star to come out would make a fortune.

A poll of professional soccer players in the UK has found 62% believe an openly gay footballer would not be outcast.

Commissioned by sporting mag FourFourTwo, they asked 100 professional players across the leagues anonymously about issues in football such as racism, drugs, and depression.

Some of the contestants joining the rugby player will be Baywatch star Pamela Anderson, actress Samia Ghadie and X Factor winner Shane Ward.

Thomas has recently spoken out about a report which states gay students find it difficult to get into sport at university.

The 38-year-old said: 'Attitudes have changed and the time is right for sport to start accepting openly gay people in the same way other areas of society have in recent years.'

Actor will train with retired gay rugby star who he will portray in film

Gareth Thomas is going to have some company in Wales next year.

Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke, star of such films as The Wrestler and Nine 1/2 Weeks, is attached to play Thomas in a feature film about his life and will be relocating to the UK to prepare for the role.

'Mickey is moving to Wales early next year to train and get fit for the filming,' Thomas tells TheGayUK.com. 'So I’ll be spending 4 months showing Mickey the sights!'

National Union of Students find homophobia in schools can put people off sports for life

UK athletes including gay rugby legend Gareth Thomas are supporting a new report which found homophobia in schools puts many LGBT students off sport.

The study published today (31 October) by Britain's National Union of Students (NUS) found that almost half of those in college and university who do not participate in any sport at college or university (46.8%) find the culture of sport to be alienating and 41.9% said they had a negative experience at school which has meant that they don’t want to get involved.

Ben Cohen and Gareth Thomas back the 39 clubs from 15 countries competing for the gay rugby Bingham Cup

The New York Gotham Knights are preparing to defend their gay rugby world title this weekend as Manchester hosts the Bingham Cup.

In total 39 clubs from 15 countries will be represented at the tournament in Manchester, north west England which is being supported by the country’s Rugby Football Union.

The gay capital of the north is preparing to host over 1,500 players and spectators from Amsterdam, Dublin, Ottawa, Stockholm, Sydney and beyond.
