14% of gay men met online in 2001

If you think apps for gay men were all about hookups, it turns out that 80% of gay men say they have met their long-term partner on one of them.

New research published in AIDS and Behavior has shown the number of gay men who have met their partners online has jumped dramatically, going from 14% in 2001 to 80% last year.

During the same time period, men who met partners at bars, sex-on-premises venues and through friends or other venues dropped.

Cross-dressing and drag is banned as delegates use jazz hands instead of applause

UK's National Union of Students has passed a policy to stop gay men appropriating black female culture.

Delegates at the Women's Conference today, many of them self-identified feminists, have passed plenty of motions.

Just one of them was ensuring everyone at the conference understood that some behaviors were damaging.

On Twitter, they announced: 'Some delegates are requesting that we move to jazz hands rather than clapping as it's triggering anxiety. Please be mindful!'

Longtime AIDS activist Larry Kramer blasted the US government while accepting the inaugural Larry Kramer Activism Award from the Gay Men's Health Crisis on Monday night.

Kramer, who turns 80 in June, came to speak his mind.

He pointed out that around the world an estimated 78 million people have become infected - 39 million of whom have died - from AIDS in the past 34 years.

In a post titled 'My husband is on grindr. I need some hugs and advice,' bonniescot123 said she recognized her husband, who she referred to as DH, because his profile picture was taken in their bathroom.

'Hands shaking. Today I found my DH on Grindr. Without a doubt it is him. Posing in our ensuite bathroom,' she wrote.

Student uses hookup app to organize Shabbot dinners
 

A university in New York has given a student a grant to bring together the local Jewish Community.

Aspiring rabbi Matt Green started using the hookup site to organize Shabbot dinners after he realised that many of his chats were not kinky they were Kashrut (a Jewish dietary law). He discusses Judaism at the dinners and at one of them 12 people attended.

Green spoke to the The Jewish Chronicle: ‘It occurred to me that what happened on Grindr was speaking to a Jewish communal need. People wanted to talk about being Jewish and Jewish things.’

Finding a daddy on Grindr is nothing unusual, but that man is not usually your biological father.

Such was the case for teen Reddit user stilldecidinginbetween when he turned to the gay bros community for advice.

'Found out that my “Homophobe” dad has Grindr on his iPhone when he asked me to go fetch it from the car,' he wrote.

23-year-old persuaded users of the app to meet in person and smoke ice

A Sydney man who robbed men he met on Grindr has been jailed for at least 17 months.

Corey Draper, 23, persuaded two men on the hook-up app to meet in person and smoke ice, then robbed them at knifepoint.

The first incident occured on 9 February 2014 at 1:30am.

Draper met a 28-year-old man, who gave him $200 for ice. He then robbed him of further $270 and a mobile phone. Draper told his victim he was a member of a gang and would kill him if he reported him to police.

US talk show host Conan O'Brien has signed up to gay dating app Grindr. 

O'Brien signed up to Grindr in a segment on his late night talk show last night, where he enlisted openly gay actor Billy Eichner to help him set up a profile on the app.

The celebrity pair chatted with a variety of gay men before getting in a customised 'Grindr Van' emblazoned with drawings of Cher and Liza Minnelli, and heading off to meet one of the lucky guys in the middle of a supermarket carpark.

Physical and verbal homophobic attacks against gay men on the rise as Ireland prepares to vote on marriage equality in referendum in May

As public debates heat up ahead of Ireland’s same-sex marriage referendum to be held on May 22, LGBT people are being warned to take safety precautions when meeting strangers they have only ‘met’ online.

The Irish Examiner reported this week that a series of reports of orchestrated attacks by assailants using websites and dating apps to attract their victim have surfaced.

Project studies the sexual arousal level of gay men when using the app

The US government has spent nearly half a million dollars on a study of gay hook-up apps such as Grindr.

The National Institutes of Health last year awarded Columbia University $432,000 to interview 60 gay men to determine whether the apps increase risky sexual behavior.

The grant for the project said, 'Given the expediency with which men are able to arrange sexual encounters using these applications, there is cause to question if, when, and how sexual negotiation and serostatus disclosure occurs.

Free app launches next week

A new 'mind-blowing' dating app for lesbians is set to launch next week.

Scissr was 'designed by lesbians for lesbians [and] is tailor-made for all – dyke, queer, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and bi-curious.'

Creator Allison Ullrich, 36, said the free app was location-based gay like Grindr – 'only classier.'

The general manager of an indoor climbing facility said the app was borne out of her frustrations with dating after moving to Chicago one and a half years ago.

Blued has 15 million users compared with Grindr's 5 million

Chinese gay dating app Blued has raised US$30 million from venture capital firm DCM in a Series B round of funding.

Earlier this year, the company received RMB10 million ($1.6 million) in Series A financing from Crystal Stream.

CEO of Blued Geng Le said, 'In 16 months, Blued has completed three rounds of financing and our valuation far exceeds that of some heterosexual social products.

'Our development can make more people to see the value of the gay internet, as well as the diversity and progress of Chinese society.'

Angry Grindr users in Berlin are seeking legal action over an 'art' project taking place in the centre of a busy square.

For the next two weeks, Dutch gay artist Dries Verhoeven is sitting in a glass-walled container and is airing his Grindr conversations - live and unedited - on screens and online.

His intention is to recruit a steady flow of men into his box for various non-sexual activities such as playing chess, having breakfast or shaving each other's beards.

The men were arrested in a raid on an apartment they rented out as a place for gay sex

An Egyptian court has sentenced six allegedly gay men to two years in jail with labor on charges of 'committing debauchery.'

Ahram Online reported on Thursday that the men were arrested in a raid on an apartment and two of them were caught 'red-handed.'

The court said the men were advertising their apartment as a place for gay sex on Facebook for $200 a night.

The men were also fined LE200 each ($30). One of them was a Moroccan national.

Authorities in homophobic countries have been using the app to hunt gay men

Grindr has disabled its show distance setting in countries that have a history of anti-gay violence, after reports that authorities were using the app to hunt gay men.

The setting no longer works in Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Liberia, Sudan and Zimbabwe among others, and more will be added to the list.

Grindr told GSN, ‘In light of recent security allegations surrounding a user’s specific location, Grindr is taking measures and will be releasing updates to keep users secure in territories with anti-gay legislation.'
