Campaigners are warning of escalating violence against gays in Athens, after knife-wielding neo-Nazis attacked a group of LGBT activists.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups in the Greek capital are 'extremely alarmed' about the escalating number of homophobic incidents in the city.

The Network for Recording Incidents of Racist Violence claims gay people are the 'new Jews in Greece', with far right groups such as Golden Dawn fanning the flames of hatred against the LGBT community.

'This is of course an obvious case of censorship, an extreme act of homophobia and discrimination which unfortunately, after what has been happening recently, we cannot characterize and unprecedented,’ said main opposition party Syriza in a statement criticizing state TV channel NET.

Premiere of Corpus Christi was cancelled after a violent protest by extremist right-wing group Golden Dawn

Greek neo-Nazis protested against a gay-themed religious play in Athens on Thursday (11 October).

Police detained 30 people during the violent protest by extreme right-wing group Golden Dawn, which aimed to stop the premiere of Corpus Christi, which features Jesus as a gay man.

In addition to blocking entry to the venue, the group also reportedly beat their opposition while the police had their backs turned.
