Expected Senate approval will make Illinois 15th state in US with marriage equality

In a dizzying turn of events, the Illinois House of Representatives voted 61-54 to pass a bill to make same-sex marriage legal in the state.

This clears the biggest hurdle in making Illinois the 15th state in the US with marriage equality.

The vote on Tuesday (5 November) afternoon ended months of intense lobbying following bitter disappointment last May when Democratic Rep. Greg Harris - the sponsor of the bill - did not bring it to a vote because he did not have the votes to win.

Demonstration takes place on first day of fall veto session for state legislature

Demonstrators arrived at the Illinois capitol by the busloads on Tuesday (22 October) to put pressure on lawmakers to make the state the 15th in the US to legalize gay marriage.

An estimated 3,000 people participated in the March on Springfield during which Governor Pat Quinn said: 'The time for marriage equality has come. This is our hour, this is our moment.'

Illinois looks set to become the next US state to legalize same-sex marriage, with two Democratic lawmakers announcing they will put forward a bill to create marriage equality in the state in 2013.

The move by Senator Heather Steans and Representative Greg Harris follows comments by Illinois state Governor Pat Quinn that he would like to see marriage equality legislation passed in the state as soon as January next year.
