From love letters in the sky to cheeky digs at Putin - this was 2014

It was a year of up's and down's, just like every year - but moments like these ones (which topped our best read story polls - thanks everyone!) showed us hope, gave us a laugh, brought unity and strength and made us come together throughout the year.

Highlights include the great Clare Balding throwing shade at Putin to a mother coming out to her son, while he is coming out to her!

With great stories like these we're looking forward to a flourishing 2015 - so, what's next?

Enda Kenny, Ireland’s Taoiseach and leader of the Fine Gael party, reportedly visited Pantibar for a pre-Christmas drink with his party’s LGBT group

Ireland’s Taoiseach – the country's equivalent to a Prime Minister – has been photographed enjoying a drink in a gay bar.

The photo was taken and posted on social media by gay rights activist Rory O’Neill, better known by his drag name, Panti Bliss.

The Courier Mail says it did not intend to diminish Mayang Prasetyo's murder by labeling her a 'ladyboy'

An Australian newspaper that drew sharp criticism for its sensationalist reporting of a transgender woman's murder has said it did not intend to diminish the value of her life - but stopped short of a full apology.

News Corp's Courier Mail labeled Mayang Prasetyo as a 'she-male' on its front page next to a picture of the victim in a bikini.

Linda Perry did it again - and this time she had her old band with her.

The rocker once again spearheaded An Evening With Women - one of the LA Gay & Lesbian Center's two biggest annual fundraisers - and raised more than $600,000 for the organization.

Gay Star News attended Saturday's event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel where such stars as Perry's wife Sara Gilbert and celebs including Sia, Natasha Bedingfield, Michelle Rodriguez and Joely Fisher chowed on vegan food, bid on big ticket live auction items and enjoyed a live concert.

'I defy these homosexuals to bring forth a baby from that part of the anatomy which they concentrate on'

Televangelist Pat Robertson said this week that he wishes people demonstrating against fast food chain Chick-fil-A for its public stance against gay marriage and millions of dollars of contributions to anti-gay groups 'would shut their mouth.'

Robertson takes issue with college students around the US, including in New York, Virginia, North Carolina and Mississippi, who do not want a company they perceive as being against LGBT rights on their campuses.

'If I have a gay dance partner, we may have some interesting discussions'

While appearing before TV writers with fellow cast members of the all-star edition of ABC's Dancing With the Stars last month, Bristol Palin was asked if she would mind if she were paired with an openly gay male dancer in the competition.

Palin, star of the Lifetime reality show Life's a Tripp, said that just because she believes in 'traditional marriage,' does not mean that she's a 'homophobe.'

Creator Ryan Murphy shares scene after reaching 500,000 followers on Twitter

Glee creator Ryan Murphy joined Twitter only days ago but he already has more than 100,000 followers.

As a thank you to fans for helping him to reach the milestone so quickly, Murphy shared with his followers a never-aired scene between Glee couple Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) from last season's Christmas episode.

'Gleeks are the best fans in the world,' Murphy wrote on Twitter. 'Because you asked for is the long lost Klaine Box Scene.'

Play is available royalty free for non-profit organizations and schools

Dustin Lance Black's play chronicling the historic trial challenging California’s Proposition 8 has just booked its 200th reading which will take place in Fargo, North Dakota, the Oscar winning screenwriter said Wednesday (18 July).

The play, simply called 8, has been performed in two star-studded benefit readings in New York and Los Angeles attracting such talent as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Martin Sheen, Jane Lynch and Matt Bomer.

'I feel like those people should stop writing letters and get a hobby'

It was last fall that the Glee episode in which Chris Colfer's character of Kurt had sex with his boyfriend Blaine (Darren Criss) for the first time.

Even though the episode also featured the straight characters of Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith) also having their first sexual experience together, most of the backlash was focused on the gay couple.

Colfer talked about the controversy on ABC's The View Tuesday (17 July): 'I don't listen to those people. I feel like those people should stop writing letters and get a hobby.'

If you’re feeling like confidence in your physical attractiveness could use a boost, this new website might help, or not.

On Gaystagram, created by 23-year-old Pedro Duarte, you can rate the relative attractiveness of gay men.

It's a similar concept to that of early-2000s internet sensation

Users submit self-portraits taken on hipster photography app Instagram, by tagging them with #gaystagram.

Armando Montano was just 22 and interning for the Associated Press

Armando Montano had begun a summer internship for the Associated Press in Mexico City less than a month ago.

On Saturday, the 22-year-old aspiring journalist from Colorado was found dead in the elevator shaft of an apartment building near where he was living.

Montano, a member of the National Association of Lesbian and Gay Journalists, was not on assignment at the time of his death.

MTV's sister channel moving away from LGBT-only programming

It was back in February that Logo, the MTV sister channel that had been dedicated to LGBT content since its launch in 2005, announced that it would be going more mainstream.

A sure sign of that new direction came this week when it was learned that the channel is canceling The A-List, the Real Housewives-style reality show that was marketed with the slogan 'housewives with balls.'

Target ran afoul with the LGBT community for donating to the political group MN Forward, a Political Action Committee that supported anti-gay gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer during the 2010 election season.

US soap set in fashion industry has never before featured same-sex romance

The Bold and The Beautiful, a US soap set in the fashion industry, will soon introduce the first same-sex romance in its 25-year history.

The show, winner of the outstanding daytime drama Emmy for the past three years, will reveal on May 17 that the character Karen Spencer (played by returning cast member Joanna Johnson) is a lesbian and married to a woman named Danielle who will be played by soap opera veteran Crystal Chappell.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, Ellen DeGeneres, Peter Thiel, Ryan Murphy, and Rachel Maddow are top 5 - Anderson Cooper #6 unveiled its annual Power 50 list of LGBT individuals on Thursday (26 April) and placed Apple CEO Tom Cook at the very top of it.

Cook was followed on the list by talk show host and comedienne Ellen DeGeneres. Rounding out the top five are venture capitalist and hedge find manager Peter Thiel, Glee creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy and MSNBC host Rachel Maddow.

Transgender candidate out, as list of candidates is down to 60

Indonesian gay rights activist Dede Oetomo is through to the next stage of the selection process for the Indonesian human rights commission, Komnas HAM.

After passing a physical exam, personality test and essay, Oetomo is one of 60 candidates through to the fourth stage of the long selection process.

Yulianus Rettoblaut, known as Mama Yuli, head of the Communication Forum of Indonesia Transgender, also applied to join Komnas HAM and made it through the first two stages, but not this latest.

During 700 Club broadcast, he claims homosexuality 'is somehow related to demonic possession'

Televangelist Pat Robertson, known to make several anti-gay statements in the past, called homosexuality a 'denomic possession' on his 700 Club television show Monday (26 March).

After a filmed piece on a married man who 'trolled the streets longing for cheap sex with other men' with his wife at home clueless to what was going on, Robertson described the man's behavior this way: 'He's obsessed, he has a compulsion. I would think it is somehow related to demonic possession.'
