Direct result of Supreme Court striking down key provision of DOMA

Same-sex couples in the US who are legally married can begin filing joint federal tax returns regardless of which state they live in now.

The US Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) made the announcement today. The change implements federal tax aspects of the US Supreme Court's striking down of a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act in June.

This means same-sex couples will be treated as married for all federal tax purposes, including income and gift and estate taxes.
