ILGA European, an LGBT advocacy group told the European parliament to suspend visa agreement with the Ukraine until it fulfills its commitments on gay rights

The European parliament was called upon to postpone visa facilitation to ensure Ukraine fulfills its commitments first on LGBT rights.

The appeal by the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) Europe comes just a day ahead (16 April) of a scheduled debate a draft resolution in the European parliament on a visa facilitation agreement between the European Union (EU) and Ukraine.

A vote on whether the EU is to allow visa-free travel from the Ukraine is expected on 17 April.

A second meeting of activists for intersex rights has called on the medical community and the UN to respect their rights

The second International Intersex Forum ended on Tuesday in Stockhom, Sweden.

The forum, part of an International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) conference, saw 37 activists from 33 organizations extend the demands agreed at last year's first meeting.

As well as ending discrimination against intersex people and ensuring 'the right of bodily integrity and self-determination', the group agreed to a list of demands mostly aimed at the medical community.

ILGA-Europe protests ‘homosexuality anti-propaganda’ law plans in Russia, Moldova, Lithuania and Ukraine

A leading European gay rights group has used international Human Rights Day to condemn gay gag laws now being discussed in Russia, Moldova, Lithuania and Ukraine.

ILGA-Europe says all the planned legislation in Eastern Europe violates basic human rights principles and sees the laws as a new attempt to criminalize lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.

Known as ‘homosexuality anti-propaganda laws’ they already exist in some states in Russia, most famously in St Petersburg where their introduction this year sparked international outcry.

France's President François Hollande bows to pressure from gay rights groups admitting his comments about same-sex marriage were 'innappropriate'

France's President François Hollande has done a U-turn over plans to give mayors' the right to opt out of performing gay marriages.

The socialist leader flip-flopped on Tuesday's announcement that the equal marriage law should respect mayors' 'freedom of conscience' after pressure from campaigners.

Campaigners around the world call for global action to end the 'horrifying' rise in transgender murders

Campaigners around the world are today marking Transgender Day of Remembrance by calling for an end to violence against people because of their gender identity.

Events including candlelit vigils and poetry readings have been planned to mark the occasion in hundreds of cities in 20 countries across the globe, from Canada and the United States to France, New Zealand and South Korea.

Turkish government ordered to pay compensation to gay prisoner kept in solitary confinement after he complained of bullying from inmates

A gay Turkish prisoner who was put in solitary confinement after complaining about bullying from inmates has won his case against the Turkish government in the European Court of Human Rights.

The prisoner, named X in court papers, turned himself in for fraud-related offences in Izmir in October 2008. He was kept in pre-trial detention until February 2009 when he complained that he was being threatened and harassed by fellow detainees because of his sexuality.

Campaigners around the world insist intersex is not a 'disorder' and urge for end to medical 'normalization'

Activists around the world are celebrating the 16th Intersex Awareness Day (IAD), calling for an end to stigmatization and discrimination.

Intersex people are people who have physical differences of sex anatomy other, which may include genetic, hormonal or genital differences or differences in reproductive parts.

Today (26 October), campaigners hope to make as many people as possible aware of what intersex is and that it is not a disease, a disorder or a medical condition.

The chair of LGBT United Macedonia was attacked by two men

The head of Macedonia’s only existing LGBT rights group, was severly attacked on Sunday (21 October) by two unidentified men in the country’s capita Skopje.

The Facebook page of the group reported that as AS (initials used to protect his identity) was on his way to his home around 9pm, he heard ‘shouts and insults such as 'Fag', 'Homo', 'You are all going to die’ directed at him.

MEPs say Serbia must improve gay rights record if it wants to join the European Union

Human rights group Amnesty International has slammed the decision to ban a gay pride event in Serbia's capital Belgrade as a 'victory for prejudice'.

The organization claims the Serbian government's order not to allow the LGBT rights march to go ahead on Saturday (6 October) is in breach of the country's law and constitution.

European Union may put new visa rules on hold to punish Ukraine if it presses ahead with ‘homosexual propaganda’ law plan

Foreign ministers could punish Ukraine for voting for a new law to ban ‘homosexual propaganda’ by not allowing it visa-free access to Europe.

GSN broke the news that the Ukrainian Parliament had pushed forward the bill, number 8711, with a landslide vote yesterday.

If it is passed, the new law would give up to five years jail to people importing, producing or spreading positive messages about lesbians, gays and bisexuals.

United Nations ambassadors of South Africa and Brazil call for action on sexual orientation and gender identity as universal human rights and want to combat hate crimes

South Africa and Brazil have told the United Nations they want more action on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights.

The statement was delivered yesterday (2 July) to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva by the ambassador of South Africa on behalf of both countries.

The statement demanded further discussion and work on the issue of violence against LGBT people and said gay and trans rights are part and parcel of the universal declaration of human rights.

The international gay organization ILGA-Europe has written to Italy's prime minister and parliament calling for a new law against discrimination and acts of violence on LGBT people

Gay rights group ILGA-Europe has written to the Italian government to denounce ‘the high level of homophobia’ in the country and demand a new law against homophobia.

The international LGBT association has sent a letter to the Italian prime minister Mario Monti, to the presidents of the two parliamentary chambers and to the leader of OSCAD, the organization in charge of monitoring discrimination in Italy.

Campaigners in Brussels, Belgium, picketed Ukrainian Mission over proposals to ban 'homosexual propaganda'

Protesters in Brussels called for the Ukranian parliament to reject a bill which bans 'homosexual propaganda' today (2 July).

Campaigners from ILGA-Europe picketed the country's Ukrainian Mission to the European Union after lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organizations in the Ukraine appealed to the international community to put pressure on politicians to stop the homophobic proposals.

The bill, similar to the one passed in St Petersburg, is due to enter its third and final reading in parliament this week.

We speak to campaigners in Chile and Peru, two countries with historical cultural tensions fighting for the same equal rights

When I stayed in Chile for four weeks in 2005, I experienced funny looks and taunting.

Discrimination there didn't come to me because I was gay, but because I was half-Peruvian.

The two countries have a strained diplomatic relationship over national borders that dates back to the late 1800s, and is still evident in some Peru-Chile relations.

Despite a historical animosity, civil society organizations from both countries are now joined in the same fight for marriage equality and protection against discrimination.

The European Court of Human Rights' ruling against Moldova hailed as 'important victory'

Moldova has been reprimanded by the European Court of Human Rights for banning gay campaigners from holding a peaceful protest outside the country's parliament.

In 2005, the Chisinau Municipal Council and the Mayor’s office rejected GENDERDOC-M’s application to peacefully demonstrate in front of the Moldovan Parliament, calling for the adoption of laws protecting sexual minorities.

The denial was later upheld by the country's Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Justice.

Activists from around the world will meet in Stockholm to discuss LGBT equality

Activists from around the world will come together for an international conference on LGBT rights in Stockholm, Sweden.

Around 1,000 people have been invited to the 26th ILGA World Conference, which runs from 10 to 16 December.

This year's theme will be 'Global Rights, Global Respect' and the event will celebrate important events of the last year, including the UN Human Rights Council's historic summit on LGBT rights in March, as well as feature discussions on current and future challenges in the fight for equality.

European Commission publishes its first ever analysis of discrimination against transgender and intersex people

The European Commission has published its first ever report into discrimination against transgender and intersex people.

Politicians have welcomed the report which is an analysis of the current EU legal order in relation to trans and intersex people.

Michael Cashman MEP, co-president of the LGBT Intergroup, said: “It’s as thorough an analysis one could hope for and a very powerful contribution both legally and politically.

'Trans and intersex persons’ fundamental rights are the same as everyone else’s and they deserve to be free from discrimination.'

Report by Fondazione Rodolfo De Benedetti indicates gay men face more discrimination when searching for work

For an Italian gay man, finding a job is harder than ever. A study by the Fondazione Rodolfo De Benedetti shows that it is 30% more difficult for an openly gay man to find a job.

The Milan-based institute of research, directed by Tito Boeri, sent companies 3,000 fake CV and cover letters. Those indicating an internship at Arcigay, Italy’s main LGBT association, were less successful and did not lead to an interview.

The study also showed that, for a lesbian, nothing changes and the rate of successful interviews is not lower than that of straight women.

Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been taped supporting LGBT rights in the past, but his ruling party is now against recognizing sexual orientation and gender identity

In politics, promises are sometimes made to be broken. But still, it is unsightly to be caught breaking one’s own vow.

On Kaos GL, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who had just assumed the post of leader for the Justice and Development Party (AKP) at the time, is shown to have called for legal protection for LGBT rights back in 2002.

In footage of the TV show ‘Genç Bakış’ with university participants, student Ahmet Altın Işık threw a question at Erdoğan, who were to become the long-serving prime minister of the country.

Moldova has adopted a law on equality today, but it has left the gay, bi and trans community as second-class citizens

Moldova adopted a new equality law today but it has left lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens still at the bottom of the pecking order.

Although the law is a positive step forward towards equality, international LGBT rights group, ILGA-Europe, is highly concerned sexual orientation is not explicitly mentioned in the list of grounds of discrimination covered by the law, apart from in relation to discrimination in the workplace.

This lack of clarity leaves members of Moldova’s LGBT community at risk of discrimination in other arenas.

Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic announces plans to recognise partnerships, getting them closer to marriage

The prime minister of Croatia has announced plans to recognise at least some 'gay marriage' rights.

Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic told reporters that registered partnerships would be ‘a somewhat higher standard than what we have now,' according to the Associated Press, though he may still stop short of full marriage equality.

Ukrainian parliament to vote on law banning 'promotion' of LGBT issues, criminalizing media coverage and work of gay rights groups

An anti-gay 'propaganda' bill, similar to the one passed in St Petersburg, has been proposed in the Ukraine.

The bill, which was recommended to the country's parliament by the Committee on Freedom of Expression and Information, would amend existing laws on ‘the protection of morals’, media and publishing, as well as the criminal code, effectively banning virtually all information on gay and bisexual issues and criminalizing LGBT human rights work in Ukraine.
