On this Mother's Day, GLAAD celebrates those special moms who have made an impact on the struggle for equality

Today (12 May) the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation honors the mothers whose love and support has been essential for the gay and lesbian community.

'On Mother's Day this year, GLAAD would like to lift up some of the exceptional mothers that we have been working with for the past year,' the organization writes on its site. 'They are women who have been dedicated to their family through many obstacles.'

Zach Wahls and Jennifer Tyrrell not satisfied with current proposal to end gay ban

Later this month, the Boy Scouts of America will be voting on a proposal to end its controversial ban on gay members.

This is good news to Jennifer Tyrrell and Zach Wahls, two unlikely activists who have found themselves at the forefront of the battle for LGBT equality in scouting.

But both tell Gay Star News in separate interviews that the battle will not truly be won until the ban ends for gay and lesbians 18 and over who want to serve.

The Boy Scouts of America announced on Tuesday (17 July) that it has no plans to lift its ban on gay members after two years of consideration by an 11-person committee.

The announcement comes on the heels of the widely-publicized case of Kansas City-area Eagle Scout Eric Jones, 19, who was immediately fired from his job as a counselor at a scout camp after coming out to the camp director on Sunday (15 July).

Ousted lesbian den leader Jennifer Tyrrell showed up as Boy Scouts of America headquarters in Dallas, Texas, Wednesday (18 July) to deliver more than 300,000 petition signatures calling for an end to the organization's anti-gay policy.

Her delivery comes a day after the BSA announced that after two years  of consideration by an 11-person committee, the Scouts will continue to ban gay members.

Former Eagle Scout George Takei, best known as Sulu from the original Star Trek TV series, spoke out Wednesday (18 July) against the Boy Scouts of America's announcement this week that they will continue to ban openly gay people.

Takei, who rode in last month's New York City LGBT Pride Parade wearing his Scout uniform, called the anti-gay position an 'ugly blemish' on an organization he 'revered' as a teenager.

George Takei, best known as Sulu on the original Star Trek television series and first batch of feature films, road on the back of a red convertible with Jennifer Tyrrell who was has emerged as the face of the fight against the Scout's anti-gay policy.

Zach Wahls became famous when his video in support of his two gay moms went viral on YouTube, reaching over 2,500,000 views so far.

The Boys Scouts of America on Tuesday (24 April) reaffirmed its ban on gay and lesbian leaders by refusing to meet with Jennifer Tyrrell, the Ohio mom removed as den leader of her son's scout troop because she is a lesbian.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation reached out to the Boy Scouts this week with an offer to facilitate meeting between BSA and Tyrrell but the organization refused.

Lesbian mom ousted as den mother of son's Cub Scout group

Protest planned in Ohio tonight in support of Jennifer Tyrrell

Jennifer Tyrrell found out last week that she would no longer be allowed to serve as a den mother for her son's Cup Scout troop in Bridgeport, Ohio.

It's not because she's not a good mom or a good den leader. It's because she is a lesbian.

Tonight (17 April), a peaceful protest by parents and scouts from the troop will be held outside of the local Boy Scouts of America. Tyrrell has served as a den leader for nearly a year.
