Yes, Jesse Tyler Ferguson is getting married.

And yes, he's a gay man.

But that doesn't mean the Emmy-nominated Modern Family star is obsessing over every detail when it comes to his wedding to lawyer Justin Mikita.

'No Groomzilla here,' Ferguson, 37, tells People.com with a laugh. 'We have a really great wedding planner who is managing everything. It's been very exciting. I'm very picky about things, and everything is coming together nicely.'

As the Illinois state legislature ponders whether to pass a marriage equality bill next week, Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson is in the state trying to drum up public support for Illinois to become the 10th state in the US to allow gay marriage.

On the ABC sitcom, Ferguson portrays Mitchell Pritchett who is raising a young daughter with his spouse Cameron Tucker who is played by Eric Stonestreet.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson may star as one half of a gay couple raising a child on ABC's popular Modern Family but the openly gay actor has discovered that even fans of his and of the show are anti-gay marriage.

'The majority of my fans have been amazing and supportive,' the actor wrote on his Facebook page late Sunday (4 November). 'But I am in shock and ashamed of many of my 'fans' who are standing firm in their stance that I am 'less than' them because of my sexual orientation.'

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Emmy nominated this year for his role on ABC's Modern Family, delighted the crowd at the Human Rights Campaign dinner on Saturday (6 October) in Washington DC with his spirited little song about marriage equality.

He sang: 'These are the states with marriage equality: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont.'

Then he added: 'Second verse, same as the first.'

But after repeating the verse, he was able to add, with great flourish: 'Washington DC -eeeeeeeeeeeeeee.'

On ABC's Modern Family, Ty Burr's character of Phil Dunphy has a brother-in-law who is gay and is raising a young daughter with a male partner.

Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson announced his engagement to lawyer Justin Mikita Wednesday (19 September) via YouTube in a video that also announced the couple's new non-profit organization benefiting LGBT equality.

'It's true, I popped the big Q,' the Emmy-nominated actor said.

Mikita, sitting next to Ferguson on a sofa excitedly told viewers: 'I said yes!'

It was in the first episode of Modern Family in 2009 that gay couple Cam and Mitch introduced their adopted baby, Lily, to the world.

Since then, the couple - played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet - has been an integral part of the comedy's Emmy-winning formula.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet have joined castmates Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara on Tuesday (24 July) in suing to void their contracts on the Emmy winning show.

Outpouring of support for CNN anchor who publicly confirmed he is gay

Anderson Cooper has been trending on Twitter all day (2 July) with the Twitterverse abuzz over his publicly acknowledging that he is gay.

Among those tweeting about the news are the CNN anchor and daytime talk show host's famous friends including Kelly Ripa, Kathy Griffin, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ellen DeGeneres, and fellow out newsman Thomas Roberts.

'I'm proud of you,' DeGeneres tweeted shortly after the news broke on The Daily Beast.
