Sheldon Cooper actor, who came out as gay last year, will take on a role in Ryan Murphy's HBO film The Normal Heart

The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons is to play a gay rights activist in a new film.

In Glee creator Ryan Murphy’s HBO film The Normal Heart, the actor famed for playing the socially awkward Sheldon Cooper will star alongside many A-list stars.

The film will take place during the HIV crisis in New York City in early 1980s.

Parsons will play Tommy Boatwright, a gay activist, the role that he played in the 2011 Broadway revival of the Tony-winning Larry Krammer play.

The Big Bang Theory gay actor Jim Parsons is developing a new television series about child prodigies.

The 39-year-old known for playing geeky neuroscientist Sheldon Cooper in the US sitcom will executive produce the show.

Titled Prodigies, the series will profile exceptionally gifted young people based on a series of videos on YouTube channel THNKR, which has over 100,000 subscribers and 12 million views.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association unveiled the nominations for its Golden Globe Awards on Thursday (13 December) and they included some nods for LGBT artists and characters.

Among them are Jim Parsons, the openly gay actor who stars on the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory. Parsons was nominated for best actor in a comedy or musical television series. 

Parsons won the Globe in 2011 and has also won two Emmys for his portrayal of the straight character of Sheldon Cooper.

Nominations for the 2013 People's Choice Awards were announced in Beverly Hills Thursday (15 November) but you won't find much in the way of LGBT representation in any of the 17 movie categories.

The closest would be a nod for Perks of Being a Wallflower in the category of Favorite Dramatic Movie. One of the leads is a out actor Ezra Miller and he plays a gay teen in the movie.

The television categories are a bit of a different story.

Entertainment Weekly cover story shines spotlight on new quiet and effective ways to go public

It used to be that when a major star came out as gay, they got an entire magazine cover to themselves.

Ellen DeGeneres got the Time cover, Lance Bass and Clay Aiken got People covers and Sean Hayes was among the many stars to have gotten an Advocate cover.

In the current issue of Entertainment Weekly which hit newsstands Friday (22 June), eight openly gay celebrities share the cover for a 'special report' called The New Art of Coming Out.
