Football clubs vow to tackle online homophobia

UK football clubs have agreed to work with the police in tackling homophobic abuse on social networking sites

Football clubs in the UK have agreed to tackle homophobic and transphobic abuse in the sport, following a summit at Downing Street yesterday.

British football governing bodies, ministers, campaign groups and ex-players met at Number 10 to discuss the problem of homophobia and racism in the game.

The event was held in light of recent high-profile incidents involving several players making homophobic remarks on Twitter, as well as Liverpool's Luis Suárez and England captain John Terry facing charges of racism.

Controversial signing comes after club asks fans to avoid discriminatory or inflammatory language

Premier League football club Queens Park Rangers issued a statement warning fans about using discriminatory language just hours after signing a player who was banned for singing anti-gay songs.

In the run-up to a match with rivals Chelsea on Saturday, QPR issued a statement saying:

'Both clubs enjoy fantastic support. However, we would remind fans that while we want to hear their passion, it’s a fact that hatred and abuse is not what being a fan of QPR or Chelsea is about.
