Police stop LGBT community from holding procession aimed at stopping homosexuality being a criminal offence

Police in Kenya have stopped people marching through the capital Nairobi today (17 May) to mark International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO).

A permit had been issued to allow Kenyan LGBTs and supporters to procession.

But this morning police withdrew the permit just as the event was about to start on Freedom Corner, Uhuru Park.

Julie Jules, Out in Kenya community leader, told Gay Star News: ‘Basically the police stopped the procession because we would be seen to be "promoting homosexuality".

Man is accused of luring gay men online with the promise of a date and then threatening to expose or hurt them if they did not give him money

Kenyan police have arrested a man accused of blackmailing gay men.

On Monday (6 May), suspect Hillary Oleshawa was arrested in a Nairobi downtown bar following a tip off from local gay activists.

He is accused of luring unsuspecting gay men on the promise of a date online, abducting them and extorting money and property.

By threatening to reveal their sexuality to their friends and family, he allegedly forced his victims to give him money in exchange for their freedom.

Some of the most homophobic countries in the world are really into gay porn, reveals porn search engine PornMD.

The company has published search data today (13 March) mapping porn habits across the globe – and it reveals in many of the worst countries to be LGBT, gay porn is as popular or more popular than straight erotica.

In Kenya, where you can be imprisoned for being gay for up to 14 years, the second most searched for kind of porn is ‘monster cock’.

Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs has funded several initiatives aiming to protect LGBT Ugandans from anti-gay hate

The Canadian government has spent thousands of dollars quietly fighting Uganda’s ‘Kill The Gays’ bill.

The government has spent more than $200,000 (US$194k, €150k) helping gay rights initiatives and projects in the African country.

Speaking to Canada’s National Post, a senior Department of Foreign Affairs official said: ‘Canadian officials have conveyed Canada’s concerns with the bill to Uganda’s Foreign Ministry’.

Kenyan sports news website Michezo Africa has published a special investigation into what it says is the ‘shocking revelation of lesbianism in Kenyan women [sports] teams.’

‘The topic of lesbianism is so controversial that no interviewed sources, gay or straight, agreed to speak on record about it,’ the report says.

Kenyan police have arrested a suspected member of a gay blackmail ring where people were extorted, humiliated and even raped for cash.

Last weekend, the suspected blackmailer was arrested when he tried to get away but was trapped in a police sting.

According to activists, four gay male victims came forward to the police to report they had fell victim to the extortionist.

After meeting the blackmailers for an online date, one victim recalled when he realized it was a trick.

Kilonzo says the government will review whether The Whale Rider, by gay New Zealand author Witi Ihimaera, is suitable to be taught in secondary schools after angry parents complained the book would 'corrupt' children's minds.

Human rights groups in Kenya have joined together to celebrate the positive contributions of LGBT people and their allies to Kenyan society

Kenya’s Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and National Gay and Lesbian Rights Commission (NGLHRC) have launched an annual awards ceremony to celebrate the contributions of LGBT people to Kenyan society and to celebrate allies of the LGBT community in Kenya.

The launch of the awards was to take place today at Nairobi’s Charter Hall and would also honour pro-LGBT employers and journalists who dealt with LGBT issues in a fair and balanced manner.

'I think it is totally unjust'

Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu is speaking out against Uganda's so-called 'Kill the Gays Bill' which could be voted on any time by the country's Parliament.

'I am opposed to discrimination, that is unfair discrimination,' Tutu said this week in Nairobi, Kenya, where he is attending a meeting of the All Africa Conference of Churches.

Tutu is the former Anglican archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa and became a hero as a leader in the anti-apartheid movement in that country. In more recent years, he has been a leading pro-gay voice across Africa.

David Kuria announced he is to withdraw from the race to become a Senator in 2013, of Kenya’s Kiambu County

David Kuria, said that lack of funding is the main reason he is withdrawing from the race to be elected as an openly gay Senator for Kiambu County, Kenya in 2013.

In a statement released on Monday (26 November), Kuria said ‘without adequate security and without resources to cover the logistics of holding meetings in Kiambu County’ he could not continue pursuing the seat.

Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Christian Friis Bach pledges over $4 million dollars.

The Danish government has agreed to give $4.4 million to help gay and bisexual men affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.

The 25 million Danish Krone will fund the International HIV/AIDS Alliance's work in Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Tanzania, where same-sex relationships are illegal.

Executive Director of the Alliance, Alvaro Bermejo, said: 'It’s heartening to see the Danish government and the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) showing such leadership for the HIV response in Africa.

Two men assault three women who spent the night in the same bed after saying they wanted to 'teach them a lesson' for acting like men

Three lesbian women were brutally assaulted and sexually molested in downtown Nariobi, the capital of Kenya.

Identity Kenya reported and independently verified the three women spent the night together in the same bed and were attacked by two men last Thursday (16 August).

The assailants, known as ‘Herb’ working at a local bar, and ‘Blacki’, a khat (stimulant drug) dealer reportedly knew the women.

LGBT activists call for closure of safe house over allegations that staff member abused residents

A safe house for gays in Kenya has been rocked after a staff member was found guilty of 'gross misconduct' for allegedly sexually abusing a transgender resident.

The marshal, who has not been named, was sacked from his post following an investigation by the Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya (GALCK).

According to GALCK, the trans 'guest' who the marshal is accused of abusing was staying at his private home from 26 June to 2 July, where she would sometimes do 'household chores'.
