Pariah earns five NAACP Image Award nominations

Nods for story of lesbian teen coming out include outstanding motion picture

Pariah, an acclaimed drama about a lesbian teenager's difficult coming out process, earned five NAACP Spirit Award nominations on Thursday (19 January) including nods for outstanding motion picture and outstanding independent film.

The drama tells the story of Aleke, a 17-year-old African-American woman in Brooklyn with a flair for poetry. Aleke (Adepero Oduye) is embracing her identity as a lesbian  but must deal with a controlling mother (Kim Wayans) and trying to find her place in the lesbian world.

The former star of TV's In Living Color plays mother of lesbian teen in Pariah

Kim Wayans knew she had it in her.

The actress best known for her work on such television comedies as In Living Color, In the House and A Different World, takes on a heavy dramatic role as the mother of a lesbian teen in Pariah which hits theaters on Friday (30 December).

The role calls for Wayans, 50, to play a religious woman in a troubled marriage who desperately does not want her daughter (played by Adepero Oduye) to be gay and tries to choose everything from her clothes to her friends.
