Sadie said she wanted to write her essay to show how transgender people were just like everyone else

When President Barack Obama became the first sitting president in US history to mention gay people in his inaugural speech, some people still felt left out.

For example Sadie, an 11-year-old vegan girl who transitioned in kindergarten, felt the president did not include her community.

Barack Obama became the first president in US history to call for equality for gays and lesbians in an inaugural speech on Monday (21 January).

'Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law,' Obama said during a 19-minute speech. 'If we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to each other is equal as well.'

A survey by Rome county and European Union shows that 73% of LGBT people are victims of hate at school, at work and in everyday life

Two out of three lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Italians are still discriminated against, claims a survey of students and LGBT activists by Rome county, Provincia di Roma.

According to the study, 73% of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Italians have been victims of some sort of discrimination at school, at work, among relatives and in everyday life.

The survey is part of a European project against discrimination. Called ‘Niso’, it has also been carried out in Belgium, Holland and Estonia.

Russian campaigners have written a letter to Madonna, urging her to stand up for gay rights and freedom of expression during her concert in St Petersburg tomorrow (9 August).

Britain’s leading gay campaign organization, Stonewall, is urging employers to protect LGB staff while working abroad.

A new guide, out today (8 June) is aimed at employers who have staff working on overseas assignments around the globe, including in countries which lack basic protection for gay and bisexual people or who actively criminalize homosexuality.

First online survey on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender lives covering whole of Europe

The first ever lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender survey covering the whole of the European Union has been launched.

Commissioned by the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) and conducted by GALLUP, it aims to learn more about the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the EU and Croatia, which will become a full member in 2013.

The survey attempts to improve EU standards on equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people by documenting the discrimination they have suffered.

Most US voters want LGBTs protected in work and, falsely, think they already are

The majority of Americans support LGBT workplace equality laws and most think it is already against the law to fire someone for being gay.

The new poll has been released by the Human Rights Campaign – the largest LGBT equality organization in the US – in partnership with Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research.

Based on a telephone survey in November and released today, the figures show support for gay workplace equality across a range of demographics.
