Madonna's latest album has been crowned Russia's top-seller of 2012, despite courting controversy by speaking out for gay rights during her tour of the country.

The Material Girl's MDNA record beat Adele's 21 and Born To Die by Lana Del Ray to be named this year's biggest selling album.

The news may come as a surprise to her homophobic detractors who were left fuming after she spoke out for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights during the Russian leg of her world tour.

Queen of Pop retains her crown to take over $228 million in ticket sales this year

Madonna's MDNA was the highest grossing tour of 2012, beating pop rival Lady Gaga.

The Material Girl made more than $228 million in ticket sales, performing over 80 sell-out shows around the world, reports Billboard.

Her tour, which started in Israel in May and ends in South America this weekend, trounced nemesis and fellow gay icon Lady Gaga to the top spot.

The 26-year-old singer lagged behind in sixth place, raking in $125 million.

A $10 million Russian lawsuit against Madonna has been dropped after a court ruled the pop superstar didn't break St Petersburg's infamous 'gay gag' law.

Nine anti-gay activists from the Trade Union of Russian Citizens claimed the Material Girl 'brutally violated' a city law that imposes fines for spreading homosexual 'propaganda'.

Anti-gay rights activists send court summons to Material Girl, claiming singer 'insulted their feelings' with gay rights comments at St Petersburg concert

Madonna has been ordered to appear in a Russian court for speaking in support of gay rights during a concert in St Petersburg.

A group of 10 anti-gay Russian activists from the Trade Union of Russian Citizens want the superstar to pay $10 million in damages, claiming she 'insulted their feelings' by flouting a city law adopted in March that imposes fines for spreading homosexual 'propaganda.'

According to Russia Today, a legal summons has been sent to the 53-year-old’s home address in New York.

Madonna has spoken out of her love for fellow pop star Lady Gaga in the only way she knows how.

The Queen of Pop and gay icon dedicated her track Masterpiece to the younger bisexual star during a performance in Atlantic City, New Jersey, over the weekend, and appeared to accuse her of copying her.

She said: ‘I love her. I love her. I do love her. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.’

Perhaps most exciting for music fans, she added: ‘And one day, very soon, we’re going to be on stage together. Just you wait.’

The Material Girl's 12th album MDNA stormed to the top of the charts in 20 countries from the United States to the UK, and Australia to Argentina.

George Michael isn't impressed with Madonna's new song.

The popstar previewed her comeback track Give Me All Your Lovin' on Friday (3 February) and although George loves the video – which features a cheerleader theme inspired by the singer's Super Bowl XLVI half time appearance yesterday (5 February) – he has hit out at the song itself.

He wrote on twitter: ‘Just saw the Madonna video, she looks great. As for the song, err... don't really think I should comment. Heheheh… (sic)

Madonna reveals colorful new album cover

Material Girl's MDNA to be released on March 26

Madonna's latest album, MDNA, won't be out for nearly two more months but the pre-release hype is already in full gear.

Earlier today, the Material Girl unveiled the album's colorful cover featuring a deconstructed photo of the star wearing bright red lipstick and heavy mascara.

The album's first single, Give Me All Your Luvin, comes out on Friday (3 February), two days before Madonna's Super Bowl halftime performance on Sunday in Indianapolis.
