Would have been one of top targets for Democrats to topple in 2014

Michele Bachmann, the US congresswoman from Minnesota who has consistently spoken out against LGBT equality, announced Wedesday (29 May) that she is not running for reelection next year.

The Republican, a darling of the ultra-conservative Tea Party, barely survived a bruising battle for reelection last November. Her campaign for the Republican nomination for the presidency in 2012 ended early in the primary season after a poor start.

Bachmann has been a vocal opponent of LGBT equality speaking out against gay marriage.
