'A person like that can have a sex change and be just as accepted as an entertainer or a TV star or something like that afterwards'

Before Bruce Jenner, there was Renee Richards.

The same year Jenner won gold at the 1976 Olympics, Richards was waging a legal fight to compete in the US Open tennis tournament as a woman.

Her transition from Richard Raskind took place exactly 40 years ago and it was at a time when the world was far less understanding about such things. There certainly was no reality show or interview with Diane Sawyer.

Robbie Rogers and Megan Rapinoe also signed the letter

Martina Navratilova has teamed up with several other top LGBTI and ally athletes to stop Kazakhstan hosting the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

The incoming law, which has overwhelmingly been approved in the Senate, is a copycat of the Russia 'gay propaganda' ban.

The athletes believe the Olympics should ensure the principles of non-discrimination are upheld and that Kazakhstan is banned from hosting the Games.

Other athletes who have signed for LGBTI equality in sports include diver Greg Louganis and soccer players Megan Rapinoe and Robbie Rogers.

The 2006 Wimbledon champion was once called 'half a man' by rival Martina Hingis

Back in 1999, Amelie Mauresmo made it to the finals of the Australian Open as a teenager and was called ‘half a man’ by her opponent, Martina Hingis.

It’s doubtful Hingis would have made such a remark had Mauresmo not come on to the scene as an openly gay player at a time when only Martina Navratilova and a few other female pros had done so.

Mauresmo may have lost to Hingis that year but the Frenchwoman went on to have a wonderful career that reached its peak in 2006 when she won both Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
