Tennis legend says reports that she will be on Celebrity Appearance are false

News began to pop up on several websites Monday (10 March) that tennis legend Martina Navratilova was going to compete on the next season of Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice.

In response to a query about it from Gay Star News, the nine-time Wimbledon singles champion tweeted that this is not true.

'No, I am not doing The Apprentice,' Martina tweeted. 'False report.'

50 Olympians past and present have signed a global petition calling on Russia to stop its crack down on LGBT people that is fueling anti-gay violence in the country

Some 52 Olympians including Sochi competitors and former medalists have signed onto a statement to call on Russia to reconsider recently introduced anti-gay laws that forbid "gay propaganda" aimed at minors. Gay pride marches and protests in support of gay rights have routinely been banned in all Russian cities in the past, and activists attempting to hold rallies are often detained by police.

Shortly before it was announced that Billie Jean King would be part of the official delegation representing the US at the 2014 Olympics in Russia, the tennis legend spoke out about gay and lesbian athletes coming out.

While female tennis stars such as King and fellow Wimbledon champions Martina Navratilova, Amelie Mauresmo and Conchita Martinez have been public about being lesbians, no male pro has ever come out as gay.

Gay sports stars Martina Navratilova and former basketball pro Jason Collins has urged the International Olympic Committee to wake up when it comes to gay rights.

The two out athletes were speaking against homophobia at a United Nations International Human Rights Day event.

Navratilova said while she does not support a boycott, she said the IOC and FIFA, the world soccer body, needs to wake up and get their heads out of the sand after awarding the Winter Olympics to Russia and the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

TV host Ellen DeGeneres has been named as the most powerful gay person in the world in a new list published today.

The 2013 World Pride Power list was celebrated at a gala dinner held at the Corinthia hotel in London last night (28 June) ahead of the release of the list to time with Pride in London today.

But some of those on the list will be controversial with British journalist, Julie Bindel, coming in at number 83 despite being slammed in the past for transphobia.

US comic and presenter Ellen DeGeneres moves up from 10th place in the 2012 list.

After a disappointing year, London Pride is back bigger and better with big acts, themed nights out, and a family day out

After the disappointment of London Pride last year, the England capital had to step it up.

But with a brand new team of organizers, this weekend is set to bring a new rainbow to London.

Several athletes will also be attending, with Pride supporting London’s bid to host the next Gay Games.

With 150 groups parading through the heart of the capital and attracting hundreds of thousands, it is shaping up to be one of the best Prides yet.

Last week, the bill passed unanimously in the Russian Duma and is expected to be approved by the upper house and signed by President Vladimir Putin.

Navratilova says Putin is ‘trying to go against whatever the West is doing.’

Speaking to the Washington Blade, she said: ‘If the West would be bad about gays, he would have gay marriage, but because the West is good with the gays – or getting better – he goes the other way.’

Bosses of Pride in London have given the green light to this year’s event having reached key fundraising and volunteer recruitment milestones.

Until this moment, it was theoretically possible the event would be canceled.

But now Pride in London has announced this year’s festival will go ahead with a week of celebrations, a full parade through the center of the UK capital, a rally in Trafalgar Square and a party in the gay district of Soho.

According to OutSports.com, the second and third-ranked tennis players in the world were asked at the Italian Open their thoughts on openly gay tennis players in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

‘I think everyone has gotten better at dealing with it,’ Murray said. ‘More and more players have come out and I think there has to be some players that are probably gay.

Longtime friends preside over 20th annual Smash Hits event

Back in 1973, Elton John and Billie Jean King were at the peak of their powers as rock star and tennis legend, respectively.

And it was that year that they became close friends with Elton going on to write his hit song Philadelphia Freedom about King - the beat is based on the way she stomped around the tennis court.

On Tuesday (16 October), these old friends got together - as they do every year - to preside over their World Team Tennis Smash Hits fundraiser for AIDS charities which raised a record $1 million this year.
