Irish researchers have found that nearly half of HIV positive gay men would still benefit from receiving the HPV vaccine while 77% of HIV negative gay men would benefit

A study of men who have sex with men in Ireland has suggested that vaccinating men who are already sexually active against the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) may still be beneficial in protecting them against the cancer causing strains of the virus.

Previously cost-benefit analyses around the vaccine have suggested that it is only worth vaccinating children against HPV before they become sexually active.

Gay rights campaigners are calling for the gay and bisexual men to receive a vaccine for HPV, claiming current policy is 'homophobic'

Thousands of gay and bisexual men could be saved from cancer if British scientists decide to offer them a simple vaccine today (22 September).

The panel will discuss whether to offer men who have sex with men a vaccine for HPV, the infection which causes 5% of all cancers worldwide. While most known to be a cause of cervical cancer, the often sexually transmitted virus can also cause cancer in the throat, anus and penis.

Men who have sex with men are at higher risk of being infected with the virus, and therefore more at risk of developing cancer.

Lifting the ban on blood donations from gay men could increase total annual blood supply in the US by 2%-4%, says UCLA study

Allowing blood donations from gay men could result in more than 600,000 extra pints of blood every year and could save the lives of as many as 1.8 million individuals, says a study by the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Report finds syphilis is at an all-time high in the country, mostly among gay men

Methamphetamine use is responsible for the rise in HIV infections in the Australian state of Victoria, according to a new survey.

A survey conducted by the Prahran Market Clinic in Melbourne has shown that 84% of its patients living with HIV said ice was a significant cause for contracting the disease.

Dr Beng Eu, director of the clinic, told Gay News Network, 'I think we're surprised to the degree of the ice use that was common, but the infection of HIV was what we were expecting.

Two male prostitutes have been found murdered in the South American former British colony of Guyana after their friend refused the advances of another man

Two gay sex workers have been stabbed to death in the Guyanese capital of Georgetown and another has escaped an attempted murder after he spurned the killer’s advances.

An unnamed man had been in a five year relationship with a male sex worker but threw gasoline on his ex after he broke up with him and tried to set him on fire near the city’s St George’s Cathedral.

However other male sex workers intervened and he fled the scene.

After that failed the man tracked down male sex workers Jason John and Carl Sinclair and stabbed them to death.

Gay and banned from donating blood? Gay men brought eligible allies to donate on their behalf

Friday marked the second annual National Gay Blood Drive to protest an US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ban on blood donations from men who have had sex with other men.

In over 60 blood donation sites across the US, gay and bisexual men who cannot donate showed up with their heterosexual or lesbian friends and family members, who are eligible donors, to give on their behalf.

Every gay and bisexual man on the planet was told to start taking drugs today – for as long as they are sexually active, even if it is the rest of their lives.

That was the message on Twitter from no lesser body than the World Health Organization (WHO).

And they meant it.

By getting gay and trans people who have sex with men to take Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis – a drug regimen for people who don’t have HIV – they hoped to cut the number of people worldwide who contract the virus by 1million over the next 10 years.

In new research done on the health and wellbeing of men who have sex with men, it found gays and bis were twice as likely to be dependent on alcohol

Gay and bisexual men are twice as likely to be depressed than straights, according to new research.

Public Health England have conducted new findings into the health and wellbeing of men who have sex with men (MSM).

The government agency is aiming to improve the way gay and bisexual men’s health is treated in the future, with a plan going up to 2020.

A PHE spokesperson said: ‘Gay, bisexual and other MSM constitute an estimated 5.5% of the male population in the United Kingdom.

In the US last year, 21% of bisexual men reported STD treatment compared to 12% for gay men and 2.3% of straight men

Bisexual men are disproportionately affected by HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, according to a new study.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published the research in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine.

According to study author William Jeffries, bisexual men are facing unique sexual health challenges.

Factors that may affect the sexual health include sex without condoms, forced sexual encounters, an increased number of sexual partners and attitudes toward pregnancy.

Gay men who are in committed monogamous relationships will join those who are not sexually active in being allowed to donate blood to the South African National Blood Service

South Africa has ended its ban on gay men donating blood for six months after they have last had sex which aimed to prevent HIV infected blood from entering the blood supply.

Under new rules announced by the South African National Blood Service gay men who are in monogamous committed relationships will be able to give blood alongside those who have not been sexually active for at least six month.

Sexual health campaigners want a pill to reduce the risk oF HIV infection available on the NHS in the UK

A pill which can reduce the risk of HIV infection maybe be available on the NHS, if sexual health campaigners have their way.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis, more commonly known as PrEP, can reduce the risk of HIV infection if the person is exposed to the virus.

Where some campaigners are anxious to have the pill introduced to the NHS in the UK, others worry the pill may reduce condom usage for safe sex.

A trial is currently underway involving 550 gay men in Brighton called PROUD, and takes place over the course of two years.

The New Zealand Blood Service has accepted a recommendation that its ban on gay men giving blood be reduced from five years after they have last been sexually active to just one year

Gay men in New Zealand will be able to give blood if they have tested negative for HIV and been sexually inactive for at least 12 months if new recomendations are approved.

Previously gay men had to be sexually inactive for five years before they could donate blood but a team from the New Zealand Blood Service noted that blood banks in neighboring Australia had successfully managed a one year exclusion period for gay men for ten years without any increase of HIV entering the blood supply.

Rates of syphilis in the US have more than doubled since the year 2000 and most new cases are among men who have sex with men, according to new data from the CDC

The US Centers for Disease Control released new data on Thursday showing that the sexually transmitted disease syphilis has returned from the brink and is spreading mostly among gay and bisexual men in America.

In 2000 the rate of infection in the US was just 2.1 cases per 100,000 people and health authorities believed they had the spread of the bacteria that causes the disease nearly beat.

Community organizations in Bangkok, Thailand have joined forces to launch the ‘TestBKK’ campaign targeting gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) to increase HIV testing in Bangkok.

Using the slogan ‘Suck. F*#k. Test. Repeat’, TestBKK will use its website www.testbkk.org, Facebook, popular websites and mobile applications used by gay men, to spread information and messages designed to encourage more gay men in Bangkok to test for HIV and to be more aware of HIV risks and the importance of using condoms.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is urging all men who have sex with other men to be vaccinated against meningitis regardless of their HIV status after a jump in cases in West and North Hollywood

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is giving out free doses of the meningitis vaccine to men who have sex with men (MSM) after four gay men came down with cases of invasive bacterial meningitis in the Hollywood area this year,

Bacterial meningitis, also known as meningococcal disease, has been responsible for the deaths of at least seven gay men in New York since 2010 and at least another three in California and authorities are concerned about what may happen if there is a significant outbreak in Los Angeles.

One in 10 men who have sex with men are looking for ‘non-gay’ men on a dating site, a study has revealed.

In research published in Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity, it found one in 10 men who use Craigslist M4M section are specifically seeking out ‘sexual partners who do not identify as gay’.

The researchers reviewed 1,200 personal ads posted on Craigslist for analysis.

Researchers believe these men are looking to either fulfill a ‘fantasy’ or because it allows closeted men to seek out others for anonymous sexual encounters.

A 200-strong mob have stormed the offices of Alternative, the Ivory Coast’s leading organization for men who have sex with men, stealing equipment and smashing windows.

The attack on 27 January has just been reported from people on the ground and can be exclusively revealed by GSN.

Claver Touré, Alternative’s executive director, said: ‘They broke windows with stones and stole computers. They left signs bearing anti-gay slurs all over the office. Everything they could take was taken, and the rest was broken.’

Health experts are warning gay and bisexual men are at high risk of contracting Shigella, a bacterial infection that can lead to ongoing frequent diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fevers.

Normally, Shigella is only contracted when travelling to foreign countries. But in gay and bisexual men, it is being spread through oral contact with feces or via unwashed hands.

The US Center for Disease Control has reported a 20% jump in unprotected sex among gay and bisexual men over a six year period - while it estimates a third of the HIV positive men who have sex with men in the US don’t even know they have the virus

A US Center for Disease Control (CDC) study of data from across 20 US cities has shown a 20% jump in the number of gay men having unsafe sex - but also shows that gay men who know their HIV status are at significantly lower sexual risk of catching or passing the virus.

The report also found that the percentage of gay and bisexual men reporting unprotected anal sex at least once during the past 12 months grew to 57 percent in 2011 from 48 percent in 2005.

German doctors are calling for the end of a ban on gay men donating blood.

The German Medical Association has said it would aim to do everything ‘within its means’ to remove the ban.

A Europe-wide ban prevents all men who regularly have sex with men to donate blood.

While countries like the UK and Sweden allow gay and bisexual men to donate if they have not had sex in a year, other European countries like Germany rule them out indefinitely.

This is because MSM are deemed to fall into the ‘high risk’ category of potential HIV risk.

Young men who have sex with men across Asia and the Pacific are facing a growing HIV epidemic according to the president of the International AIDS Society

Rates of HIV among young men who have sex with men (MSM) in Asia and the Pacific are at ‘epidemic’ proportions, a leading epidemiologist has warned ahead of the start of the 11th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific.

Speaking at an event convened by the Asia Pacific Coalition on Male Sexual Health (APCOM) earlier today, International AIDS Society president Dr Chris Beyrer said ‘we have an epidemic in this region, among young MSM.’
