Homophobic epithets are so pervasive across the globe that most heterosexual people are sadly unaware of the psychological and physical toil they have on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. Too often and cavalierly these epithets go either unchecked or unchallenged as hate speech.

Mexico, however, has stepped forward to define and reduce homophobic hate speech. Two commonly used words – ‘punal’ and ‘maricones’ are the main targets. Both words closely translate as ‘faggot’.

The Mexican Supreme Court has ruled that two popular anti-gay slurs are hate speech and are not protected under freedom of speech in the country’s constitution

Mexico’s Supreme Court has ruled that the anti-gay slurs ‘punal’ and ‘maricon,’ both roughly translating as ‘faggot,’ constitute hate speech and are not constitutionally protected free speech.

The Supreme Court judges voted 3-2 on Wednesday in a case where a publisher and his colleagues at the Synthesis newspaper had been slandered with both terms in a column by a journalist at a rival newspaper named Intolerance.

Both newspapers are based in the state of Puebla.

World Out Games 2017 has been awarded to Miami Beach

After site visits to both cities, delegates from as far afield as Los Angeles, Mexico, Manchester, Australia and Tonga gathered together for final presentations, deliberations, and a vote - which has ultimately gone the way of Miami Beach.

Machete Kills, a film starring the Born This Way pop star, debuts 13 September 2013 

Lady Gaga makes her acting debut this year.

The international pop sensation is playing La Chameleon in Machete Kills, the action thriller sequel to 2010's Machete. The film's director Robert Rodriguez, also directed graphic novel-turned movie Sin City and Once Upon A Time in Mexico.

In July 2012, Lady Gaga unveiled a picture of her character wrapped in a wolf's skin and brandishing a smoking gun.

She recently tweeted about her upcoming role: 'I am so excited. Filming was insane'.

Charlie Sheen uses anti-gay slur; his apology doesn't help matters

At this point, no one should be shocked.

According to Gawker, actor Charlie Sheen was the master of ceremonies at the opening of his bar in the El Ganzo hotel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He greeted the crowd, that included Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, with an anti-gay slur.

Mexico this week began accepting blood donations from gay and bisexual men – becoming the first North American nation to do so. From now on sexual behavior not sexual orientation will determine who can donate

New blood donation regulations screening donors based on sexual history rather than sexual orientation have been implemented in Mexico, making it the first country in North America to end its ban on men who have sex with men donating blood.

The new regulations came into effect December 25 and now means any HIV and Hepatitis negative gay or bisexual man who has a history of safe sex and is not a sex worker or injecting drug user may donate blood.

The rule was approved in August and then published in the Official Journal of the Mexican Federation on October 26.

Cecila Hernández screened the Harvey Milk biopic in class, the story of the first gay American elected to public office

A middle-school teacher in Mexico has lost her job after screening pro-gay film Milk to her students.

Cecilia Hernández, a new civics teacher at Lomas Hill School in Cuajimalpa, was addressing sexual orientation and human rights in class as part of the curriculum.

Milk tells the story of Harvey Milk - the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the United States in 1977. In 1978, he was assassinated and became a gay hero.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita announced their engagement to the public back in September but the Modern Family star actually proposed to his fiance two months earlier.

Two years after the Supreme Court ordered all 31 states to recognize gay marriages officiated in Mexico City, some states begin to plan their own same-sex marriage laws

In 2010, Mexico's Supreme Court mandated the whole country recognize gay marriages conducted in the capital.

As a result of the 9-2 decision, all 31 states were to honor the rights of gay couples married in Mexico City, but they were not required to pass their own same-sex marriage legislation.

Two years later, some Mexican states are setting plans in motion to allow same-sex marriages.

According to Infonor, the northern state of Coahuila will consider modifying the state's civil code in order to permit same sex couples to marry.

The fashion guru will be hosting Baggage, an eight-part series due to air later this year.

In the show, already airing in America and Australia, potential partners are picked by contestants who gradually reveal their secrets and flaws.

Armando Montano was just 22 and interning for the Associated Press

Armando Montano had begun a summer internship for the Associated Press in Mexico City less than a month ago.

On Saturday, the 22-year-old aspiring journalist from Colorado was found dead in the elevator shaft of an apartment building near where he was living.

Montano, a member of the National Association of Lesbian and Gay Journalists, was not on assignment at the time of his death.

Angel Javier Segovia Domínguez remains at large as the primary suspect in the murder of Leo Robert Wicard, a Pennsylvania retiree living in Mérida, Yucatan

Four suspects have been arrested for the murder of a gay American in his home in Mexico.

The fifth and primary suspect Angel Javier Segovia Domínguez is still at large.

Domínguez is being charged with stabbing 64-year old Leo Robert Wicard multiple times in the victim's home in Mérida, Yucatan, prior to partially-burying him in the garden.

Authorities arrested Martín Alejandro Gómez Gómez, 26, Gianri Lorenzo Matos Montalvo, 18, Edward Jesús Gamboa Salas, 36, and David Pérez Moreno, 26, on 25 May (Friday) as accomplices in the murder.

Winning 252 votes for, 80 against and 15 abstentions, in the country's House of Representatives these amendments improve the constitutional rights of gay, lesbian and bisexual Mexicans.

Competition to be hosted by cabaret star and South African entertainer

A multi award winning South African entertainer and a cabaret star have been announced as hosts of the Mr Gay World (MGW) grand finale.

Taking place on 8 April at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, Johannesburg, the event will also see performances from a number of acts including a Russian pop star and former Mrs World, a South African soap star and a local performance troupe.

Founded in 2009, the MGW contest is held annually and claims it allows gay men representing their nation to compete to become ambassadors for equality.

A gay couple in San Francisco is challenging the federal marriage law that disregards same-sex unions in a bid to stay together in the U.S.

San Francisco’s federal immigration court put a deportation case on hold today (23 March) for a gay undocumented immigrant married to a U.S. citizen, according to the couple's attorney.

Alfonso Garcia, a 35-year-old Mexican native who moved to the United States with his parents in his mid-teens, and his 37-year-old husband Brian Willingham are petitioning the federal immigration service for legal residency based on their marriage, the CNN cited attorney Lavi Soloway as saying.

Jose Orozco says suit will allege abuse of power, malicious prosecution, defamation and more

The ugly split between Pinal County Sheriff and Arizona congressional candidate Paul Babeu and ex-boyfriend Jose Orozco just got uglier.

Orozco alleges that after their split, Babeu asked him to sign an agreement not to publicly discuss their relationship. When he refused, he says Babeu and his lawyer threatened the Mexican national with deportation.

Orozco, 34, has said he is in the US on a 10-year tourist visa and that Babeu never asked him his legal status despite the lawman's strong political stance against illegal immigration.

Passenger sees 30-year-old fall into sea off Atlantis Cruise ship Allure of the Seas just outside Cozumel

A British passenger is missing in the sea off Mexico after going overboard while on a gay cruise.

Another passenger raised the alarm after he saw the 30-year-old man go over the rail on deck 11 of the biggest cruise ship in the world, the Allure of the Seas at 7.10am local time on Friday (3 February). The sighting was confirmed by CCTV footage.

The Royal Caribbean International owned and operated ship was charter by lesbian and gay cruise specialists, Atlantis Events.

The body of a man wearing women's clothes was found by police in Apodaca, near Monterrey, after local residents heard gun shots and explosions.

According to the police report, the body was found lying face down and was about 25 years old.
