Andrew Rannells, Jonathan Groff, Harvey Fierstein and Michael Urie among those making powerful musical statement in Love and Punishment

With a cast that could rival a Tony Awards telecast in terms of star wattage, some of Broadway's biggest stars use their talent in a new video to make a statement against Russia's anti-gay propaganda law.

In the video, the Russian government cites the propaganda law in outlawing theatrical performances on 'The Great Red Way.'

The Russian Broadway community responds in the only way they know how - they put on a show called Love and Punishment.

Comedy starring out actor Michael Urie struggled in the ratings

Most new television sitcoms would love to have the ratings achieved by Partners starring Michael Urie, David Krumholtz, Sophia Bush and Brandon Routh.

But for CBS, the number one broadcast network in the US, 5.5 million viewers is not enough and show about a pair of best friends - one gay and one straight - has been canceled.

'Thanks for the love and support!' Urie tweeted to fans Friday (17 November). 'Partners will always have a special place in my heart.'

Steve Levitan: 'The minute it becomes our agenda, it loses some of what makes it perhaps special'

It was in the first episode of Modern Family in 2009 that gay couple Cam and Mitch introduced their adopted baby, Lily, to the world.

Since then, the couple - played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet - has been an integral part of the comedy's Emmy-winning formula.

Other US networks have taken notice.

This fall, Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells star as a gay couple having a baby with the help of a surrogate mother in the NBC comedy The New Normal. And over at CBS, Michael Urie and Brandon Routh play a couple in the sitcom Partners.
