Former Michigan assistant attorney general Andrew Shirvell must pay Chris Armstrong for harassing him

When former University of Michigan Student Body President Chris Armstrong couldn't get an apology from Andrew Shirvell for engaging in a one-man, anti-gay campaign against him in 2010, he sued.

Armstrong was seeking $25,000 in damages from Shirvell,  a one-time assistant attorney general for the state. But a jury in U.S. District Court on Thursday (16 August) decided he deserved much more: $4.5 million.

University of Michigan student says he would've dropped case if Andrew Shirvell apologized

All former University of Michigan Student Body President Chris Armstrong wanted was an apology.

But Andrew Shirvell, a one-time assistant attorney general for the state, has refused to say he is sorry for engaging in a one-man campaign against the openly gay Armstrong in 2010.

Now the two men will face off in court.

Jury selection is beginning in Detroit federal court in a defamation civil lawsuit Armstrong, who graduated in 2011, has filed against Shirvell.

A state hearing officer in Michigan ruled on Tuesday (27 March) that Andrew Shirvell, a one-time assistant attorney general for the state, was justly fired in 2010 for his harassment of a gay student leader.

William Hutchens of the Michigan Civil Service Commission said Shirvell engaged in 'hate speech' on a blog and 'physical and mental harassment' of then University of Michigan Student Body President Christopher Armstrong.
