Reports that anti-gay Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe may be visiting New Zealand for a private speaking engagement, protest planned

Robert Mugabe, the President of Zimbabwe who has branded gays and lesbians 'worse than pigs and dogs', may be visiting New Zealand for a private speaking engagement.

Mugabe is banned by the EU from traveling to Europe and if New Zealand allow him into the country for a private speaking engagement it would be very controversial.

A Zimbabwean senator has called for prisoners to be given sex toys to stop them being gay.

Sithembile Mlotshwa, an MDC party senator, made the remark during a parliamentary committee meeting on Gender and Development on Monday (12 March).

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe celebrated his 88th birthday on Saturday with a tirade of homophobic abuse.

The African leader told supporters at a mass rally to celebrate the ocassion that NGOs have 'stupid ideas' and blasted UK Prime Minister David Cameron for his pro-gay rights stance.

'Nature is nature. It has created male and female,' Mugabe said. 'That's how we were born, so we reject that outright and say to hell with you.'

This comes after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said gays should have the same rights as other minorities in the new Zimbabwean constitution currently being framed by representatives of the three main parties.
