LGBT Zimbabweans speak anonymously about the fear, harassment and violence experienced under the president’s anti-gay campaign

‘Now the real fear is kicking in,’ said one LGBT Zimbabwean after homophobic leader Robert Mugabe claimed an election victory this week.

Mugabe, who has ruled the country for 33 years, earlier this week claimed a landslide victory after pledging ‘hell for gays’ if he was elected. 

The official result is not due out yet and Zanu PF officials may have breached rules by claiming victory early.

President Robert Mugabe’s party is claiming a landslide victory after pledging ‘hell for gays’ if he was victorious.

In June the dictator said he would amend laws, if his Zanu PF party was re-elected, so LGBT ‘offenders’ would ‘rot in jail’ for life.

Zimbabwe gay people will be going to the polls next week, and many are asking if it can get much worse than President Robert Mugabe.

It is an election marking the end of the troubled coalition government led by a notoriously homophobic president and the more mysteriously silent Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

Robert Mugabe, the President of Zimbabwe who has branded gays and lesbians 'worse than pigs and dogs', may be visiting New Zealand for a private speaking engagement.

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe tells UK Prime Minister David Cameron 'to hell with you' over gay rights

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe celebrated his 88th birthday on Saturday with a tirade of homophobic abuse.

The African leader told supporters at a mass rally to celebrate the ocassion that NGOs have 'stupid ideas' and blasted UK Prime Minister David Cameron for his pro-gay rights stance.

'Nature is nature. It has created male and female,' Mugabe said. 'That's how we were born, so we reject that outright and say to hell with you.'
