German-born Mr Gay World Andreas Derleth references the Nazis' pink triangles in his verbal submission to New Zealand's parliamentary committee examining same-sex marriage

Mr Gay New Zealand and Mr Gay World Andreas Derleth referenced the Nazis' pink triangles, which were used to label gay concentration camp inmates, during his submission to a parliamentary select committee on marriage equality.

'As Mr Gay NZ and Mr Gay World I travel widely and meet people with problems regarding bullying and mental health relating to persecution,' Derleth said on the last day of the hearing in Auckland, Gaynz.com reports.

Wendelinus Hamutenya claims organizers of gay pageant are trying to 'sabotage' his work

Last year's Mr Gay Namibia winner has been suspended over domestic violence claims, just days before he is due to hand his crown to a new lucky finalist.

Wendelinus Hamutenya won the title in November 2011 in the country's first ever gay pagaent and was also one of the first black Africans to compete in Mr Gay World 2012 in neighboring South Africa.

However, organizers of the event have suspended Hamutenya after it emerged he is being investigated for domestic violence in Johannesburg.

Leonardo da Vinci is an artist, philosopher, mathematician, inventor and legend.

But now he has another title to add to his proverbial mantelpiece, da Vinci has been named the most influential gay man of all time.

While we know very little about his sexuality, court records of 1476, when the young artist of the Mona Lisa was aged 24, show him and three other young men were charged with sodomy. However, the case was thrown out for lack of evidence.

Mr Gay World competitors in Johannesburg, South Africa take on sports, receptions, parties, elephants and the Belgian embassy

Mr Gay World contestants have spent the last few days absorbing South African culture and stripping off to take part in a ‘sports challenge’.

Delegates from around the world are attending the event in Johannesburg but Mr Gay New Zealand, Andrea Derleth, have picked up the prize so far, for an obstacle course and written exam on questions about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history.

Hunks and hotties from around the world have descended on South Africa to represent their countries in the Mr Gay World (MGW) contest.

The finals will take place on Sunday (8 April) at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, Johannesburg.

The MGW contest is held annually and claims it allows gay men representing their nation to compete to become ambassadors for equality.

MGW calls their winners ‘genuine and positive role models that will champion equality and diversity in society and the media both gay and mainstream’.

Competition to be hosted by cabaret star and South African entertainer

A multi award winning South African entertainer and a cabaret star have been announced as hosts of the Mr Gay World (MGW) grand finale.

Taking place on 8 April at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, Johannesburg, the event will also see performances from a number of acts including a Russian pop star and former Mrs World, a South African soap star and a local performance troupe.

Founded in 2009, the MGW contest is held annually and claims it allows gay men representing their nation to compete to become ambassadors for equality.

Fears for safety of Mr Gay World's black African contestants, as Zimbabwean pulls out and Ethiopia's entry receives death threats

The Mr Gay World contestant from Ethiopia may not be able to return to his country after receiving death threats.

The global male beauty pageant, which is this year held in Johannesburg, from 4 to 8 April, was last week celebrating after getting its first black African finalists.

Mr Gay World's first black African finalists may help fight anti-gay laws across the continent

Mr Gay World's first black African finalists will send out a 'powerful message of hope', say organizers.

Robel Gizaw Hailu from Ethiopia, Wendelinus Hamutenya from Namibia, Lance Weyer from South Africa and Taurai Zhanje from Zimbabwe, will compete in the global male beauty pageant in Johannesburg, from 4 to 8 April.

Homosexuality is illegal in 38 African countries, with Mauritania, Sudan, and northern Nigeria allowing for the death penalty.

Mr Gay World's Africa director Coenie Kukkuk has hailed the news as a major development.

The capital of the Philippines, Manila, played host to the Mr Gay World Competition in March this year. But in November we headed over there again to see the locals choose their entry for 2012’s contest. The final was held in Bed Bar (www.bed.com.ph), one of Manila's most popular gay clubs and by the time the boys made their entrance onto the stage the venue was packed with friends, family and well-wishers.
