NBC on Friday (10 May) cancelled its gay-themed comedy The New Normal after one season.

Ratings never really took off for the Ryan Murphy-produced show which sometimes had storylines that reflected real life with marriage equality currently a front-burner issue in the US.

The Will & Grace alum will star in Sean Saves the World

Sean Hayes, an Emmy winning sensation on NBC's Will & Grace for eight years, is returning to the network in a new comedy series this fall, it was announced Thursday (9 May).

'We are thrilled and can't wait,' Hayes wrote on Twitter.

Sean Saves the World has Hayes playing the father of a 14-year-opd girl who moves in with her dad. His character is adjusting to that change as well as having a new boss at work who is quite temperamental.

Hayes came out publicly as a gay man in 2010. It's not yet known if his character on the sitcom will also be gay.

National Football League punter Chris Kluwe thinks his support for gay causes could get him cut from his team

Gay ally and Minnesota Viking football player Chris Kluwe is concerned his activism will keep him off the team's 2013-2014 roster.

The National Football League punter sent a note to the NBC website PFT after his team drafted another punter in the most recent draft (held 25 April to 27 April).

‘I never imagined that it would be this great. I just really love this storyline from the bottom of my heart'

Freddie Smith knows he's a part of something special.

The young actor, who received his first Daytime Emmy nomination this week, plays one half of a gay couple on the NBC soap Days of Our Lives in a storyline that fully integrates the characters with the rest of the fictional small town of Salem.

‘I never imagined that it would be this great,' Smith told Gay Star News in a recent interview. 'We had expectations but I just really love this storyline from the bottom of my heart. It’s nice to go to work every day and have such a positive impact.’

Third straight nod for Chandler Massey, first for Freddie Smith

Chandler Massey and Freddie Smith, who play a young gay couple on the NBC soap Days of Our Lives were both nominated for Daytime Emmy Awards on Wednesday (1 May).

Massey, who plays the role of Will Horton, was nominated for the third consecutive year in the category of Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series. He won last year.

AJ Clemente's 'gut wrenching' gaffe has him looking for work

AJ Clemente has gone from anchoring at a tiny station in North Dakota to appearing on NBC's The Today Show in a matter of days.

But he didn't get a promotion - he got fired.

Clemente, unaware he was on the air, appeared to say 'gay fucking shit' at the start of his very first newscast as weekend anchor at the Bismarck station KFYR-TV.

He told Today's Matt Lauer and Savannah Gutherie he was struggling to practice the name of London Marathon winner Tsegaye Kebede, mangled it, then said the expletive.

New poll shows slight majority of US respondents favor granting marriage rights to gay couples

According to a NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, 53 percent of US respondents favor allowing gay couples the right to marry.

As reported by the website First Read, this number is two points up from a similar survey conducted in 2012 December. The poll also shows 42 percent are opposed to gay may marriage, also a two point jump. These changes are within the margin of error.

Cooper's CNN colleague Howard Kurtz reports he's not interested

Anderson Cooper has not yet commented on reports that NBC News has approached him about taking over Matt Lauer's job as host of The Today Show.

But his CNN colleague Howard Kurtz, host of the show Reliable Sources, reported on Sunday (31 March) that Cooper is not interested in the gig.

Kurtz said Cooper, who hosts a nightly show Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN, prefers to stay with the cable network.

Jenna Wolfe and Stephanie Gosk are expecting a baby this summer

Jenna Wolfe and Stephanie Gosk are both well-known faces to viewers on NBC various news programs.

What viewers did not know until Wednesday (27 March) morning is that the two star network news journalists are a couple and are expecting a baby this summer.

Wolfe appeared on The Today Show (she co-hosts the weekend edition of the show) to share the news that she is pregnant and went public about her relationship with Gosk, a foreign correspondent.

CNN star also reportedly being considered as replacement for Matt Lauer on The Today Show

With Anderson Cooper's daytime talk show ending soon, the CNN star has some intriguing possible gigs including a show with pal Kathy Griffin and becoming host of NBC's The Today Show.

Deadline is reporting that Cooper and Griffin, who have co-hosted CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage for at least six years, filmed a pilot this week at CNN studios in New York.

Details are sketchy but it was filmed in front of a live audience that included new CNN boss Jeff Zucker.

Justin Bartha's character's membership revoked for 'homosexual conduct'

The New Normal, the NBC comedy about a gay couple starting a family, is airing an episode this week (26 March) that focuses on the Boy Scouts of America's ban on gay members and leaders.

The episode has the character of David, a gay physician  played by Justin Bartha, volunteering to help out a friend by chaperoning an overnight scouts camping trip.

He agrees to participate despite the concern his TV executive hubby Bryan (Andrew Rannells) who is concerned about the BSA's anti-gay ban.

Openly lesbian comic will continue to host her critically and commercially acclaimed daytime talk show to 2017

Openly gay comic Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime talk show was renewed for four more years, it was announced today (11 March).

After marking its 10th year on the air, the syndicated show was renewed through to the 2016-17 by NBC.

Valari Staab, NBC President, described the show as ‘the crown jewel’ of the daytime lineup.

‘In fact, “Ellen” is the top choice for women 25-54 in her time period in seven of our markets, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, this season,’ Staab said.

Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o wants a career in the NFL but a well-publicized dead girlfriend hoax has teams taking into consideration more than his playing abilities.

But by the end of evening, everyone was talking about NFL player Kluwe whose visibility as an LGBT activist grew exponentially last September when he blasted Maryland Assembly Delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. in a withering, profanity-laced letter.

National organization would let local affiliates decide whether to admit gay scouts

Under increasing pressure, the Boy Scouts of America is considering ending its controversial ban on gay members and leaders only seven months after reiterating its anti-gay stance.

NBC News reported Monday (28 January) that the national leadership of the scouts is in the final stages of policy change that, if approved by its national board, would allow openly gay people to participate in scouting.

At Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards, Victor Garber took some ribbing from George Clooney and others when he arrived to the stage after Argo producer Grant Heslov had begun his acceptance speech.

The fllm, in which Garber portrays a Canadian ambassador in Iran who agrees to hide a group of Americans, won the Best Picture-Drama prize and was also nominated for an Academy Award for best picture.

As he rides that success, Garber is also one of the stars of the new NBC drama Deception which premiered last week and airs on Monday nights in the US.

But the prolific producer of such movies as Chicago and Hairspray took some time out to chat with Gay Star News about another little project that has been taking up just about all his time: producing, with Meron, the 85th Annual Academy Awards.
