The openly gay actor played conniving Marc St. James, the assistant to diva magazine editor Wilhelmina Slater played by Vanessa Williams.

But back in 2006, when he began on the show, the actor says he was encouraged to stay in the closet.

Tony winning production will extend its Broadway run through October with a new star

The plan was for Hedwig and the Angry Inch to end its Broadway run in August when star Neil Patrick Harris is scheduled to leave the show he has headlined since April.

But following Tony Award wins this week for best revival of a musical and best actor in a musical, producers have decided to keep the show running through October.

To do so, the have chosen a new star: Andrew Rannells, according to the show's Twitter account.

Neil Patrick Harris was so serious about transforming into a transgender punk rock singer in Broadway's Hedwig and the Angry Inch that he went way beyond wearing make-up, miniskirts and fishnet stockings.

'I've lost 20 pounds almost for the role to try and be more feminine which sort of changed my whole posture,' Harris said in an interview with ABC's Good Morning America which aired today.

Harris, his cheekbones sunken in, described himself as 'Jared Leto manorexic.'

Literally.

The How I Met Your Mother star posed for renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz in the May issue of Vanity Fair.

But this was not any old beauty shot, this was of the star half naked with a lot of eyeliner on, and with two snakes draped around his chest.

While most of us would be terrified at just the thought of posing topless in a magazine, never mind with two snakes around you, he looks like a rock star.

The selection of Stephen Colbert today to replace David Letterman as host of The Late Show on CBS ended speculation that Neil Patrick Harris could become the first openly gay host in late night history.

Harris took to Twitter to congratulate the host of The Colbert Report who will take over for Letterman next year.
