He looked great in his tighty whities and did a great opening number hosting this year's Academy Awards but several jokes fell flat and the ratings were down.

But it's all in fun in parody video celebrating 70th anniversary of Thomas the Tank Engine

No one could blame Neil Patrick Harris if he was feeling a little cranky following those mixed reviews he got for hosting the Oscar last week.

But really, yelling at a bunch of 6 year olds?

'The answer for a fag to something that is boring is to take his pants off'

As if Neil Patrick Harris wasn't getting enough flack already, the Oscar host also got slammed this week by members of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church for stripping down to his tighty whites.

The hate group protested outside the Oscars in Hollywood on Sunday then demonstrated outside the offices of The Hollywood Reporter the next day as part of a protest against the media.

A Hollywood Reporter editor met with the protesters and asked Shirley Phelps-Roper what she thought of Harris' underwear stunt which was a spoof of a Michael Keaton scene in Birdman.

Jokes to audience after: 'That whole thing was completely improvised'

Neil Patrick Harris had hinted in interviews that he wouldn't open the Oscars with a musical number.

He lied.

The first-time Oscar host seemed to be opening with a traditional monologue when he took a shot at the lack of diversity in this year's nominees when he said they were here 'to honor Hollywood's best a whitest - I'm sorry! Best and brightest!'

He then quickly segued into a musical number filled with very current movie and pop culture references including the lyric 'I secretly hope someone pulls a Kanye West.'
