Opposition to same-sex marriage has increased in New Zealand, poll shows

Poll from The New Zealand Herald shows that 48% of respondents oppose gay marriage, up from 40.5% last June

A new poll from the New Zealand Herald has shown that opposition to same-sex marriage has risen in the country.

The Herald DigiPoll survey showed that 48% of respondents believed marriage should remain between a man and a woman, 7.5% more than a poll last June.

Support for same-sex marriage was still higher than opposition however, but this had fallen by 4%.

New Zealand to vote on gay marriage

Same-sex marriage bill is likely to be passed in New Zealand, with support across all parties

A same-sex marriage bill was picked today to be debated and voted on by the parliament in New Zealand.

The Definition of Marriage Amendment Bill was sponsored by lesbian Labour MP Louisa Wall and it states that marriage should be defined as the union of two people regardless of sex, sexual orientation or gender identity.

The bill was one of five drawn from a pool of 62 bills in the Members’ Bill Ballot.
