The Deputy Chief Minister of Australia’s Northern Territory has had to apologize after he called a fellow MP’s gay son a ‘pillow biter’ and ‘shirt lifter’ and he has now resigned after days of sustained criticism.

Country Liberal Party MP and territory Treasurer Dave Tollner defended allegations of homophobia by pointing out that his mother has been in a same-sex relationship for 27 years and that he has a gay nephew who’s relationship he supports.

Another Australian jurisdiction has announced it will legalize same-sex marriage if the  government refuses to act

Another Australian jurisdiction has announced it will legalize same-sex marriage, while at a federal level, Australian Government senators have introduced their own private members bill to legalize same sex marriage.

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT), which houses the Australian capital of Canberra, today announced it would legalize same-sex marriage at a territory level, joining the states of South Australia and Tasmania who have also pledged to do so.

A third Australian jurisdiction has opened the door for the legalization of same-sex marriage at a state and territory level in an embarrassing slap down for opponents

Australia’s Northern Territory may become the country’s third jurisdiction to legalize same-sex marriage after the ruling Labor Party announced it would allow its members a conscience vote on the issue if such legislation came before the territory’s parliament.

Embarrassingly for opponents, the announcement was made by NT Labor to the main lobby group opposed to same-sex marriage in Australia.

City in Australia's Northern Territory chosen as host of regional gay sporting tournament

Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory has been chosen as the host city for the third Asia Pacific Outgames in 2014.

A delegation from the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association – Asia Pacific (GLISA-AP) visited Darwin last month (April 2012) to view the sporting and conference facilities and met with politicians, government officials, tourist operators and members of the local GLBT community.

The group said it was impressed with the range of 'first-class' facilities and support from the community for the games, which will run from 10 May to 16 May.

Advocates say at least 45,000 submissions in favour of same-sex marriage were submitted to senate inquiry

A same-sex marriage bill that is currently the subject of a senate inquiry in the Australian parliament has become ‘the most strongly supported Bill in the nation's history’ according to advocates.

Campaign group Australian Marriage Equality (AME) say that at least 45,000 submissions in favour of same-sex marriage were sent to the senate inquiry into the issue, four times more than the overall number of submissions received by the next largest inquiry into the Northern Territory Euthanasia Bill in 1997.
