UN called upon to oppose rampant worldwide anti gay and trans bigotry

Rights group tell UN Human Rights Council to take action against homophobia, following its ongoing discussion of a report on the matter

A report by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) currently debated by the UN Human Rights Council found that discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity remains widespread and persistent throughout the world.

The council is due to pass a resolution on the matter next week, and human rights groups have urged it to take a strong stand against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Icelandic MPs and Swedish MEPs call for Manning to get Peace Prize

A group of Icelandic MPs and Swedish Members of the European Parliament have called on the Nobel Peace Prize Committee to award its prize for 2013 to Bradley Manning, the gay US soldier that leaked hundreds of thousands of classified documents to Wikileaks

A group of Icelandic MPs have called for Wikileaks whistle-blower Bradley Manning to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the second time in two years, and have been joined by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs)

All three MPs from Iceland’s The Movement party and the Swedish Pirate Party’s two MEPs wrote to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee in Oslo, Norway, to urge them to award Manning the prize.

They were joined in this call by Slim Amamou, a former Tunisian Secretary of State for Sport and Youth.

Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit secretly flew to India to care for a gay palace employee's twin babies, born to a surrogate mother in the subcontinent.

The royal made the trip in late October after the worker and his husband, who are also her friends, couldn't get a visa for the journey.

Aussies win top prize at Cardiff gay film festival

Australian film The Wilding wins £25,000 Iris Prize after being showered with plaudits from critics

Australian film The Wilding came out on top at this year's Iris Prize, Cardiff's international gay and lesbian short film festival.

The story of two inmates falling in love in a juvenile detention center beat over 30 entries from countries including Israel, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Norway, Australia and the United States for the £25,000 ($40,255) prize amid a torrent of praise from critics.

Jury chair, Lisa Power, called it 'wonderfully self-assured' and 'a special film which demanded attention'.

World celebrates 100 years of gay WW2 winner Alan Turing

Father of computer science who was prosecuted for being gay is honored across the world

Alan Turing, known as the father of computer science, the codebreaker that helped win World War 2, and the man tortured by the state for being gay, is being celebrated today (23 June).

The British born mathematician and cryptanalyst’s birthday is being honored across the world, with events planned in the UK, USA, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, the Philippines, New Zealand, Israel, Spain, Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Portugal and Germany.

His centenary is also being celebrated with a Google doodle, a functional Turing machine that predated the modern computer.

Mr Gay World announce hosts for grand finale

Competition to be hosted by cabaret star and South African entertainer

A multi award winning South African entertainer and a cabaret star have been announced as hosts of the Mr Gay World (MGW) grand finale.

Taking place on 8 April at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, Johannesburg, the event will also see performances from a number of acts including a Russian pop star and former Mrs World, a South African soap star and a local performance troupe.

Founded in 2009, the MGW contest is held annually and claims it allows gay men representing their nation to compete to become ambassadors for equality.
