'You have to put it out to the universe - what you want to do'

On Saturday (12 January) Kylan Wenzel will be one of 229 contestants onstage at the Pasadena Convention Center competing for the title of Miss California.

But Wenzel, 26, will have probably done more than any of the other contestants to get there.

Wenzel, a transgender woman, moved her sex reassignment surgery up by six months last year after the Miss Universe organization changed its rules to allow trans women to compete in its pageants.

Stars of The Following smooch when asked about their chemistry

It's not like Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy planned on locking lips.

But they did it!

During the Fox network's presentations at the TV Critics Association press tour in Pasadena this week, Bacon and Purefoy were asked about their undeniable chemistry on the new show The Following which will premiere 21 January.

A critic told the actors that they have so much chemistry on the show that in one scene she wanted them to just start kissing.

Said Bacon: 'Anything could happen.'

He then leaned in and gave each other a kiss.

'We're working seven days a week, 24 hours a day and having the best time of our lives'

Craig Zadan was at the Television Critics Association's annual winter press tour in Pasadena this week to talk about the NBC series Smash which he executive produces with longtime professional partner Neil Meron.

But the prolific producer of such movies as Chicago and Hairspray took some time out to chat with Gay Star News about another little project that has been taking up just about all his time: producing, with Meron, the 85th Annual Academy Awards.

''We're working seven days a week, 24 hours a day and having the best time of our lives,' says Zadan.

Behind the Candelabra will air on HBO this spring starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon

Oscar winning director Steven Soderbergh said Friday (4 January)  that he was 'stunned' when every single major Hollywood studio passed on making his movie Behind the Candelabra which will air on HBO this spring.

The movie tells the story of the flamboyant star Liberace and his relationship with a much younger man named Scott Thorson.

'They said it was too gay,' Soderbergh told Gay Star News and other outlets during the annual Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena.

A Maryland lawmaker who thinks same-sex marriage will lead to the teaching of homosexuality in schools has injured four children in a drunken boating accident

A homophobic Maryland lawmaker has admitted to being drunk when he accidentally crashed his boat into a boat full of children.

Maryland delegate Don H. Dwyer Jr was drinking with another man on his boat on the Magothy River in Pasadena around 7pm when his boat struck a smaller vessel with five children on board.

Four of the children were injured with one, a five year old girl, taken by helicopter to Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

Two adults on the boat were unharmed.

The smash was so severe that Dwyer’s boat sunk in the river.

Paul Lee defends the network's strong record of LGBT portrayals

ABC President Paul Lee said Tuesday (10 January) that he doesn't get what all the fuss is about when it comes to the network's new cross-dressing sitcom Work It.

The Human Rights Campaign, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and transgender activists pressed ABC to not air the comedy about two men who dress as women to land sales jobs.

They feared it could contribute to the high levels of job discrimination that transgender Americans face.

Bravo executive's Watch What Happens Live now airing five nights a week

Andy Cohen had no plans to become the first openly gay talk show host in the history of U.S. television.

But it has happened because as an executive at Bravo, he launched a blog and a boozy little online show called Watch What Happens Live.

It soon turned into a weekly show featuring big-name guests, more booze, and plenty of the network's personalities from such shows as the Real Housewives franchise.

On Sunday, the show transitioned to a five-nights-a-week affair and has installed a full bar on the set as part of the expansion.

Reality star excited to have new show as he strikes out on his own

With his new Bravo show, It's a Brad Brad World airing its second episode tonight, Brad Goreski chatted with Gay Star News about how things have been going since last week's premiere.

'Life has been really good,' he said during a chat at Friday's NBC-Universal party in Pasadena. 'The show premiered really, really well and the response has been great which is all you can hope for.'

AIDS Healthcare Foundation float honored the late actress and activist at annual Pasadena event

A float in Pasadena's Rose Parade honoring the late Elizabeth Taylor and other AIDS activists as well as those who have died from the disease won the Queen's Trophy on Monday (2 January).

The trophy went to the float sponsored by AIDS Healthcare Foundation for having the 'most effective use and display of roses in concept, design and presentation.'

It was the first time in the parade’s 123-year history that an HIV/AIDS-themed float was a part of the parade.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation to present float in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade to commemorate the late Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor, the first famous activist in the fight against HIV/AIDS, is the  focus of the first Rose Parade float dedicated to the fight against the disease, it was announced this week.

The float will be part of the 2012 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena on Jan. 2, a 123-year tradition that takes place before the annual Rose Bowl college football game.

It will be titled 'Elizabeth Taylor: Our Champion' and is from the Los Angeles-based AIDS Health Care Foundation.
