Mother of 16-year-old girl from UK beaten after kissing her partner says the attack left her daughter 'ashamed'

A woman who was part of a group which attacked a lesbian teenager on a train after spotting her kissing her girlfriend has been jailed.

April James, 20, of Carfax Close in Bexhill, Sussex, England, was sentenced to six weeks in prison at Hastings Magistrates’ Court yesterday (14 May) after pleading guilty to assault by beating.

The 16-year-old victim was attacked on 15 October last year while travelling by train to Bexhill with her girlfriend, also 16, after attending the Hastings Bonfire celebrations.

Indiana, USA student Darnell 'Dynasty' Young says he fired a stun gun in the air because he felt threatened 

Nearly a month after firing a stun gun at school, Darnell Young has been expelled.

The Indianapolis high school student's mother gave him the weapon for self-defense after months of bullying.

Young carried the stun gun in his bag for weeks until April 16. Reports state that six students surrounded Young, and he shot the stun gun in the air to ward them off. Young was arrested on campus shortly after and a hearing on his matriculation was held last week.

Darnell Young's mother gave him a stun gun for protection at school in Indiana, USA after months of bullying.

Now, Young faces expulsion for firing the stun gun in the air when he was surrounded and taunted by fellow students on campus last month.

Young's mother Chelisa Grimes said in a CNN interview yesterday: 'I do not promote violence- not at all- but what is a parent to do when she has done everything that she felt was supposed to do? I did feel like there was nothing else left for me to do, but protect my child.'

Countries across the world back International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia to fight school bullying

Countries around the world will stand united in a landmark event to tackle homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools in two weeks’ time.

Fighting homo/transphobia through education will be the theme of this year’s International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) which will be commemorated by almost 40 countries on 17 May.

More countries are joining a list which already includes Burma, Fiji and Haiti who have never taken part before.

Singer and actress Aubrey O'Day seemed expecially proud of winning a challenge on NBC's Celebrity Apprentice Sunday because it meant she was able to present a check of $50,000 to the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.

GLSEN is an is an organization that seeks to end discrimination, harassment, and bullying based on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

Gay rights activist Kathy Griffin joins Ellen DeGeneres in support for documentary Bully

Kathy Griffin has spoken out against bullying in a public service announcement inspired by the documentary Bully.

The gay friendly comic created the PSA in response to the film that explores children’s stories as they face being bullied every day.

The film released tomorrow (30 March) in select US cinemas has drawn controversy over the Motion Picture Association of America’s initial decision to award it an ‘R’ rating, meaning people under 17 years old must be accompanied by an adult to see it.

An Irish LGBT youth organization called BeLonG To has snagged a famous Irishman to help in its campaign against the bullying of gay kids: movie star Colin Farrell.

The group has launched Stand Up! Don’t Stand for Homophobic Bullying Campaign which calls on everyone, gay and straight, to support each other in taking a stand against homophobic bullying.

A primary school in London, UK, is leading the way in tackling homophobic bullying, teaching children from three to 11 why gay is about love not sex

The moment you walk through the doors of London’s Alfred Salter Primary School and are asked to read and understand its ‘equality statement’, it’s clear this is no ordinary school.

Colorful display boards speak of tolerance, diversity and inclusiveness, things that were largely absent from my own school days.

The school may not be unique in the UK for its progressive attitude, but where it is leading the way is in the strong stance it has taken on homophobic bullying.

Wisconsin LGBT community produce Lady Gaga themed music video for anti-bullying campaign

Colton Boettcher, a young gay man from Madison, Wisconsin (USA) has produced, directed and edited an anti-bullying music video for the It Gets Better Project.

The video, choreographed to Lady Gaga's song Hair, stars members of the local LGBT community.

The YouTube video description explains: 'Hair is about being yourself, being true to who you are; as the song exemplifies, "you are the spirit of your hair, it's all the glory you bare", YOU are your #hair.

A gay teenager from Tennessee has hanged himself after being bullied at school.

A 14 year old in Tennessee, US, has become the latest gay teenager to commit suicide after a year of constant bullying at school.

Phillip Parker hanged himself in his foster parents’ bathroom in Gordonsville, leaving a note in a trash can reading 'please help me mom', family members told US news channel WSMV.

'He kept telling me he had a rock on his chest,' Ruby Harris, Phillip's grandmother, told the station.

Ashland City organising against gay bullying after Jacob Rogers shot himself

Incensed residents of a town in Tennessee have called for a review of anti-gay bullying policies following the suicide of a local teenager.

Openly gay 18-year-old Jacob Rogers shot himself on 7 December.
Authorities have claimed that there was no mention of school bullying in the letters he wrote before his suicide.

But since his death a friend has revealed that Rogers was subjected to persistent name-calling at Cheatham County Central High School in Ashland City, Tennessee.

Utah’s Willowcreek Middle School said 14-year-old gay pupil asked them to tell his parents

A school in the US state of Utah has defended its decision to ‘out’ a pupil to his parents.

Staff at Willowcreek Middle School asked the 14-year-old boy if he wanted them to tell his parents after he had come out to his classmates, a spokesman said.

However they admit he was reluctant for his parents to know and only agreed they should be told if he was not present.

The school’s approach has been criticized as wrong and dangerous by activists.

Jonah Mowry's video about suicide and self-harm got worldwide support, but some have accused him of lying.

A teenager who posted a video about being bullied by homophobes became a YouTube hit but some people are now questioning if it was true.

In the original video Jonah Mowry, aged 14, describes how he considered suicide and holds up a list of the abuse that has been thrown at him by bullies.

The school student, now entering the eighth grade, also describes how he has self-harmed. He shows the scars on his arms and shoulders, holding up a sign which reads: ‘I have cut a lot, I still have the scars.’

A US school district has suspended students who bullied gay teen Jamey Rodemeyer who then took his own life.

Students who bullied a gay teenager who then committed suicide have been suspended by their school district in upstate New York, USA.

The Williamsville Central School District has suspended several students over the death of 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer in September, according to the Buffalo News.
