As pressure mounted last year on US President Barack Obama to take a stand on an issue - gay marriage - on which he was still famously 'evolving,' it was his vice president who gave him the nudge he needed.

Joe Biden went on NBC's Meet the Press and expressed his personal support for same-sex marriage. Just days later, Obama did the same in an interview with ABC News.

'A lot of people criticized me for speaking out, not long ago, about gay marriage. I could not remain silent any more,' Biden said on Sunday (15 September) at a political fundraiser in Iowa.

US VP speaks out for transgender rights in Florida, where Mitt Romney leads President Obama in electoral votes by 1%

US Vice President Joe Biden addressed transgender rights at an Obama for American office in Sarasota, Florida on Tuesday (30 October).

According to the Huffington Post, Vice President Joe Biden commented on transgender discrimination to a woman in the crowd names Linda Carragher Bourne.

Bourne told the vice president her daughter was Miss Trans New England, a teen pageant that according to their website is 'not affiliated with the Miss American Organization in any way'.

VP has optimistic words for lesbian couple during weekend campaign stop

It was US Vice President Joe Biden who jumped the gun with his support of marriage equality no doubt speeding up the timeline of President Barack Obama's own endorsement.

Biden, during a weekend campaign stop in Chillicothe, Ohio, encountered a lesbian couple and said of same-sex marriage: 'It's going to happen.'

The couple, Cathy Pool and Mendy Yates, have been together for 25 years and said Obama and Biden's personal support on this issue meant 'everything in the world.'

US Vice President Joe Biden, paying a visit to Provincetown, Massachusetts, over the weekend to headline a pair of fundraisers, had high praise for the area's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents.
