Words like ‘homo’ and ‘maricones’ are now frowned on but even ‘gay’ and ‘homophobia’ have been debated by some

As the country becomes more accepting of the civil rights of its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer Americans, it is also beginning to reexamine its language used to demean us.

In last month’s New York Time’s article The Decline of the ‘H’ Word Jeremy Peters wrote that while the word ‘homosexual’ for the most part is ‘inoffensive,’ ‘outdated,’ and perhaps ‘innocuous,’ the word nonetheless is viewed by many in our LGBTI community as a pejorative term.

The defensive line coach for the Colorado State University football team has been suspended without pay for two weeks after hurling an anti-gay slur at a player on the opposing team.

Greg Lupfer was caught by ESPN cameras saying what appeared to be the words 'f*cking faggot' at Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday, according to

The outburst occurred after Halliday threw a touchdown pass in the first half of the game which Colorado went on to win 48-45 win.

Alec Baldwin has done it again – caught on camera in a cussing tirade hurling anti-gay epithets at the vulture paparazzi on his heels.

This time Baldwin’s accused of spewing out the phrase, ‘cocksucking fag’.

Baldwin doesn’t deny using the word ‘cocksucking’. Some argue his admission is merely because he can’t lie his way out. But Baldwin claims that’s not the case because he simply had no clue the word was a homophobic slur.

And he tweets: ‘I apologize and will retire it from my vocabulary … you learn something new every day.’

30 Rock star has continued his campaign to apologize for what he refers to as 'offensive and unacceptable' behavior

Alec Baldwin has come up with a unique way of stopping the backlash over his alleged use of a gay slur, by ‘coming out’ himself.

The 30 Rock star jokingly professed his love for a member of his entourage in front of a large crowd.

‘I want you to be my lover, Matt,’ Baldwin said, according to USA Today. ‘I love you, Matt. I love you in that way.’

He was making an appearance at a major technology conference in San Francisco, where he later admitted he would never love a man in a sexual way.

After using an anti-gay slur publicly for the second time this year, Alec Baldwin had his MSNBC show pulled from the air for two weeks.

Anderson Cooper, CNN's openly gay anchor, thinks he is getting off easy.

Baldwin called a photographer who got too close to his wife and child a 'cocksucking fag' last week in an incident caught by TMZ cameras.

'If Alec Baldwin had yelled the N word to that photographer or yelled an anti-Jewish slur against that photographer, it would be over,' Cooper said Monday (18 November) on his CNN show.

British singer James Arthur has learned one thing this week - homophobia is bad for business.

The 25-year-old X Factor winner’s debut album shot to the number two position in the official charts last week, but it now looks set to crash after the slur.

At the time of publishing, Arthur’s album has fallen from the top position to number 30 in the iTunes charts in the matter of days.

While it could of course be a coincidence, it appears calling someone ‘fucking queer’ has led to his fans refusing to download his music.

In a Huffington Post editorial posted today (16 November), the star of 30 Rock doesn't know what he said, but is certain no anti-gay slur was uttered.

'...I never used the word faggot in the tape recording being offered as evidence against me,' Baldwin maintains.

A Christian couple have caused outrage after refusing to tip a gay waiter and calling him a ‘fag’.

The waiter, 20, had just finished giving excellent service to a couple in a suburban Kansas City Italian restaurant.

But instead of receiving a tip from the couple, he received a nasty message.

‘Thank you for your service, it was excellent,’ it said.

‘That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD.

‘Queers do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours.

A Youtube video gone viral captures 20-year-old Elliot Darrow passionately performing his poem for the University of North Carolina during the final stages of the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational.

Darrow, according to The Times Magazine Swampland Blog, describes himself as a straight male but says it is his religion that ‘drives his writing’.

After cries of 'kill the battyman!', a gay rights activist believes this incident is another that proves homophobic attacks are rising on the Caribbean island

A gay man narrowly escaped being stoned to death by a mob in Jamaica on Saturday (21 September).

The young man, who has asked to not be named, was walking home after visiting a friend in St Catherine, south-east Jamaica.

Maurice Tomlinson, a gay rights activist based in Jamaica, reports at around 11pm, he was set upon and stoned by a mob of men shouting ‘Kill the battyman.’

It was also believed they yelled ‘ketch di battyboy’ [catch the faggot], ‘hol him no mek him get way’ [hold him and don’t let him escape.’

A mother is furious after her son was attacked in a Florida Walmart for wearing a 'girly' headpiece

A two-year-old boy was called a ‘faggot’ and assaulted for wearing a pink hairband.

Dexter Vyktoriah was with his 31-year-old mom Katie and five-month-old sibling out shopping in Wallmart in Polk County, Florida.

Mother Vyktoriah was shocked when an unknown man, who she describes as being ‘overly large with a bushy beard and camouflage shirt’ approached the family.

‘He had tattered shorts and lace-up work boots with no laces. I could smell the fug of cigarette smoke surrounding him, and there was a definite pong of beer on him.’

A team of research students has mapped out the most homophobic and racist states in the US using hate speech Tweets.

A group of students from Humboldt State University in California have published the results of their Geography of Hate project, which set out to identify ‘the geographic origins of online hate speech.’

According to the website: ‘the data behind the map is based on every geocoded tweet in the US from June 2012 – April 2013 containing one of the “hate words”.’

On Saturday, the San Jose Earthquakes forward called Will Johnson, a midfielder for the Portland Timbers, a ‘fucking faggot’.

Victim: 'They knew I was gay. They knew they were taller and bigger'

A gay man was beaten unconscious as his attacker repeatedly called him a faggot in Davis, California, over the weekend.

Mikey Partida, 32, had been celebrating his birthday and was leaving his cousin's house early Sunday (10 March) when the attack occurred.

Partida said a man who lived near his cousin began to verbally harass him as he was leaving the house.

He said he ignored the loud taunts of 'faggot' and quickly walked by. But then he had to turn around and go back to his cousin's house to retrieve his keys.
