World Out Games 2017 has been awarded to Miami Beach

Reykjavík or Miami Beach? It’s a tough choice but that’s the decision that the World Out Games have been grappling with today at their meeting in Antwerp.

After site visits to both cities, delegates from as far afield as Los Angeles, Mexico, Manchester, Australia and Tonga gathered together for final presentations, deliberations, and a vote - which has ultimately gone the way of Miami Beach.

The annual LGBT aquatics championships will be drenching the state of Washington in 2013

International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics (IGLA) is the organization that brings the world’s LGBT aquatics clubs together, sharing information and knowledge as well as staging an annual championships for LGBT competitors in swimming, diving, open water, synchronized swimming, and water polo.

We caught up with Jason Stone, head of the organizing committee for IGLA2013 to take a look at plans for this year’s event which will be held in the US city of Seattle.

Eurovision fans will be well entertained at Rainbow Reykjavik festival with Hera Björk and Paul Oscar leading the line-up.

Both have enjoyed international success following their participation in Europe's most loved talent show and ultimate guilty-pleasure, the Eurovision Song Contest, in 1997 (Paul Oscar) and 2010 (Hera Björk). And other Icelandic Eurovision contestants will join them on stage to perform their own songs as well.

The race to host major LGBT sports, human rights and culture event heats up

Openly gay Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo will today host a press conference which will announce the two cities that have been shortlisted to bid to host World Out Games 2017.

Gay Star News can reveal that the shortlisted cities are Miami Beach and Reykjavik.

The mayor of Reykjavik dressed in a pink dress and balaclava during Iceland's gay pride parade to support Russian female punk band Pussy Riot.

Standing on the float marked with the words ‘Gayor’, Jon Gnarr dressed in the trademark clothes of the women who are currently on trial for staging a pro-gay protest against President Putin.

Maria Alekhina, Ekaterina Samutsevich and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova were accused of 'hooliganism on the grounds of religious hatred' for singing a song which also spoke out for gay rights.

I first met David Hermann in Reykjavik - it was the welcome drinks for IGLA 2012 (the annual championships of the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics association). It was an informal reception in Reykjavik’s Marina Hotel but Hermann’s warm and engaging personality somehow seemed to fill the room.

Imagine me standing in the middle of the Arctic Circle in mid-winter in just my swimming trunks and with my face covered in white mud.

Starting with the opening party on 30 May, the championship lasts four days. The 2012 event will include swimming, water polo, relay events, synchronised swimming and diving.

A midnight open water swimming challenge will take place on 1 June in the Nauthólsvík neighbourhood of Reykjavik for those brave enough to take to take on the north Atlantic at night.
