Ohio's Rob Portman came out for marriage equality after his son came out as gay

Ohio Senator Rob Portman has been listed as a possible Republican vice presidential candidate in the past two presidential elections.

He doesn't think it will happen again in 2016.

Portman acknowledges that by coming out in support of gay marriage in March 2013 - after his son came out as gay - he may have doomed his chances of running for president or vice president.

'It puts me at odds with my party in many respects,' he said in an interview posted online this week with Hoover Institute fellow Peter Robinson.

Being in denial, playing straight, making anti-gay jokes then getting drunk and spilling the beans isn’t the best way to come out

Coming Out Day is today (11 October). This is an important day not only for those who make the move and come out, but also for everyone else to be aware of the process. It is the process where an individual becomes more honest about who they are, even at the risk of public or private scorn and ridicule.

'Does every United States Senator have to have a kid come out and say, “Mom, Dad, I’m gay” for them to actually believe in equal rights?'

As a longtime LGBT ally, Kathy Griffin was no doubt happy to see Ohio Senator Rob Portman cross Republican party lines last month and come out in support of gay marriage.

But that doesn't mean the funny redhead isn't going to give Portman a hard time in her act for doing so only after his own son came out as gay.

'The Republican party’s not going to change on this issue'

Although public opinion is shifting on the issue, former US Senator Rick Santorum insists it would be 'suicidal' for the Republican party to embrace gay marriage.

Santorum, who finished second to Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican presidential nomination last year, remains steadfastly against marriage equality and thinks others in his party should remain so too.

Will Portman: 'We’d had a tacit understanding that he was my dad first and my senator a distant second'

The son of Rob Portman is defending his father against critics who wonder why the Ohio Republican Senator waited two years after learning his son was gay to publicly support gay marriage.

'Part of the reason for that is that it took time for him to think through the issue more deeply after the impetus of my coming out. But another factor was my reluctance to make my personal life public,' Will Portman writes in a guest column for the Yale Daily News.

Senior Republican Rob Portman came out for same-sex marriage when his son Will came out as gay. But GSN’s resident dad wants him to rise to the challenge of being a great father

I relate to the Portman family on many levels. Like Will Portman, I am also the son of a staunch Republican dad to whom I came out. My dad is older than Rob Portman. He adheres very much to the viewpoints of Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. Rob Portman presumably knows all those people personally.

Like the Portmans, we too had our political theory versus family integrity moment. In 2000, another Republican father of a gay son, Pete Knight, placed an anti-same sex marriage initiative on the California ballot called Proposition 22.

Republicans, the New Yorker magazine, gay marriage and some humor go a long way

The New Yorker magazine has fun with Republicans and gay marriage. Using the real story of Senator Rob Portman's announcement that he now is a supporter of gay marriage, writer Andy Borowitz creates an alternative (joke) world where Republicans have decided not to talk to their children.
