Gay man delivers inaugural poem, One Today, that pays homage to a diverse America

Richard Blanco is first gay person and first Latino to be inaugural poet

Richard Blanco followed on the footsteps of such celebrated American poets as Robert Frost and Maya Angelou on Monday (21 January) when he delivered a poem at the second inauguration of US President Barack Obama.

Blanco is a 44-year-old man from Maine,  is the first gay man and first Latino chosen as inaugural poet.

Richard Blanco to joins the ranks of such past inaugural poets as Robert Frost and Maya Angelou

Robert Blanco has been chosen to do what such celebrated American poets as Robert Frost and Maya Angelo have in the past: write an original poem and recite it at the inauguration of a US president.

But Blanco has made history by being the first openly gay man chosen, the first Latino, and at 44, he is the youngest inaugural poet ever.

Blanco, a resident of Maine, will recite his poem at the swearing in of President Barack Obama on 21 January in Washington DC.
