It was nearly nine years ago that then CNN Headline News anchor Thomas Roberts came out publicly as a gay man at a gathering of fellow journalists in Miami.

His career suffered some setbacks after he went public but it is now in high gear with Roberts anchoring a two-hour show on MSNBC each weekday that has helped the network's ratings grow in the time period.

Openly gay anchor took over two hour block formerly occupied by Ronan Farrow and Joy Reid

No one can say that Thomas Roberts hasn't paid his dues.

For more than a year, the newsman rose well before dawn to host MSNBC's Way to Early and to appear on the show that follows it, Morning Joe.

But three weeks ago, Roberts was moved to the afternoon shift on the cable network to take over a two-hour time block that had been formerly occupied by Ronan Farrow and Joy Reid.

In his first two-and-a-half weeks, Roberts has quickly more than doubled the ratings of Farrow and Reid who have been given other assignments at MSNBC.

'When you think you're all that and a bag of chips, boom!'

Robin Roberts snagged one of the biggest scoops of her career in May 2012 when President Barack Obama announced that he was publicly supporting gay marriage.

During an appearance on The Meredith Vieira Show Tuesday (23 December), Roberts revealed that during the interview at The White House, Roberts noticed her producer holding a huge sign off camera after Obama made his announcement.

Roberts figured it had congratulatory words but instead it read, 'Lipstick on teeth!'

'What was he supposed to do? Shake his hand?'

Robin Roberts, the out host of ABC's Good Morning America, doesn't know what the big deal is with Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend after being selected by the NFL's St. Louis Rams.

'Sometimes there's a stigma attached to how people view you if you're living a certain way. But I don't care - you gotta live your life'

Robin Roberts has been on ABC's Good Morning America since 1995 and shared with viewers her battles with breast cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome.

But it was not until last December that she shared with the world that she is a lesbian and in a long-term relationship.

Roberts was widely applauded for her decision to finally go public but there were also those critics who felt she had waited much too long given her high-profile and the battle for LGBTI equal rights on the front burner.

She has no apologies.

HRC honoree Paris Barclay jokes that during Roberts' nomination hearing 'you did not see one, single picture of (him) in that wig. But I have them.'

When Paris Barclay accepted the Visibility Award over the weekend at the Human Rights Campaign gala in Los Angeles, he shared with the sold out crowd a high school memory that US Supreme Court Justice John Roberts would probably want forgotten.

It seems the two were classmates at an all boys high school long before their paths went in separate directions. Roberts ended up heading the highest court in the US and Barclay an Emmy winning director who is the first black and first gay president of the Directors Guild of America.

Another TV star coming out may be nothing new, but when she has had to overcome all the extra challenges Roberts has, it merits applause

While I will continue to argue the African American community doesn’t have a patent on homophobia, it does, however, have a problem with it.

Black homophobia still has a deadly hold on African American life. And while I would like to say its oppressive grip only impacts lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people of African descent, in truth, black homophobia maims the entire community.

For example, to date more than a quarter of a million African Americans have died of AIDS – both straight and gay.

Tells viewers: ‘I have never been happier or healthier’

Good Morning America host Robin Roberts returned to the air today for the first time since coming out as a lesbian over the holidays.

Roberts made clear she would remain open as she and the on-air team shared highlights from their respective vacations and she talked about a family wedding she attended.

'The family was all together in Baton Rouge over the weekend, and we have a family photo,' Roberts said. 'Next to me is my girlfriend, Amber.'

While First Lady Michelle Obama and plenty of other people have been quick to congratulate Good Morning America host Robin Roberts for coming out publicly as a lesbian, others have wondered what took her so long.

CNN's Don Lemon took to the air on Monday (30 December) to shed some light on why he thinks Roberts or any television news personality is still reluctant.

Andy Cohen asked and Danny Roberts told - sort of.

During a reunion of MTV reality show stars this week on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live, Cohen asked a group that included Roberts if they had ever hooked up with any of their fellow castmates.

All said no except for Roberts who appeared on The Real World: New Orleans in 2000 and on Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Battle of the Seasons in 2002.

So who was it everyone wanted to know.

'Can’t say because he’s straight and married now,' Roberts answered.

Among the invited guests of Chief Justice John Roberts at Tuesday’s Supreme Court hearing on Proposition 8 will be his lesbian cousin Jean Podrasky.

The San Francisco resident wants to marry her partner so she has a lot riding on whether or not a majority of the justices uphold an appellate court ruling which declared California’s gay marriage ban unconstitutional.

Miami is Robierb's hometown and it was at a New Year's Eve party that the couple first met.

The ceremony will be conducted by MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts, a fellow newlywed.

But he's never been forgotten.

In his 2008 interview with Out magazine, Neil Patrick Harris said Roberts was a role model for him at that time because 'before him I'd never seen anyone wear [homosexuality] so comfortably.'

California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom performs ceremony in NYC

The setting was the rooftop of Manhattan's Gansevoort Hotel on Park Ave. as MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts married his longtime partner, Patrick Abner, in New York City over the weekend.

The couple exchanged their vows in a ceremony Saturday (29 September) performed by Gavin Newsom, the Lieutenant Governor of California and former San Francisco mayor who in 2004 authorized same-sex marriages in that city which were later annulled.

'The BEST night ever with Patrick Abner,' Roberts tweeted after the ceremony. 'Thanks to the most amazing friends and family.'

'You hear all those horrible stories about high-profile people who had been living these closeted lives. There's no excuse for it anymore'

Wearing a tight-fitting Buzz Lightyear costume on a Los Angeles movie set, Ian Roberts is a long ways away from his days as a professional rugby player in Australia.

He calmly does take after take of a scene taking place at a Halloween party for the romantic comedy Saltwater where, ironically, it is his love interest (played by the film's writer, Ronnie Kerr) who is dressed as a rugby player.
