Christopher Pearson, a gay conservative intellectual, died at home in Adelaide yesterday

Christopher Pearson, columnist for The Australian and speech writer for Australia's conservative former Prime Minister John Howard, has died aged 61.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott paid tribute to Pearson saying he was one of Australia's 'finest conservative intellects' and a 'steadfast' friend.

'I valued Christopher's counsel and his wisdom,' Abbott said, Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Australian marriage equality advocates have condemned the vandalism of an anti-marriage equality billboard in Wynyard, Tasmania, as well as the business signs of the man behind the billboard, sign maker Graham Hodge.

Hodge had put up an anti-marriage equality sign in April without planning permission but was forced to take it down.

A man who was ordered by his local council to remove an anti-gay marriage billboard from the side of a road in north-western Tasmania has erected another one with the assistance of local church groups.

Graham Hodge erected the first sign in April near the town of Wynyard which depicted a male symbol and a female symbol and an equals sign with two rings but was ordered to take it down by Burnie City Council after it was discovered that Hodge had no approval to erect the sign.

New figures reveal a vast majority of Australian voters support marriage equality and want conservative political parties to allow a conscience vote on it

Four out of five Australians want Members of Parliament (MPs) to be allowed to vote as they wish on the same-sex marriage bill and not according to party lines, says a new survey.

Ahead of a federal parliament vote on same-sex marriage, the special online poll, conducted by research company Roy Morgan, showed strong public support for federal reform to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.

Melbourne Ports MP Michael Danby has announced he will vote for marriage equality on the same day that hundreds of LGBTs and their supporters marched in Sydney

Around 500 people participated in rallies and a march for marriage equality today in Sydney.

The marchers assembled next to Sydney’s town hall and then marched through the city past Hyde Park and up Oxford Street to assemble at Taylor Square where they used chalk to remark a ‘rainbow crossing’ which had been controversially removed by the New South Wales state government.

A Member of Parliament (MP) from Tony Abbott's socially conservative Liberal party in Australia has opened up about his support for same-sex marriage.

'I support the right of same-sex couples to have their loving and committed relationships recognized in state-sanctioned marriage,' said 23-year-old Wyatt Roy, parliament's youngest MP.

However Roy is currently barred from voting for same-sex marriage legislation because Abbott is not allowing opposition Liberal-National coalition MPs a conscience vote on the matter.

In a blog post, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, and leadership rival for current leader Julia Gillard, has declared his support for same-sex marriage.

Voters who go to the polls in three divisions in Tasmania on Saturday are urged to vote for marriage equality

Tasmania Gay & Lesbian Rights Group are trying to make this Saturday's election for the state's Upper House all about marriage equality.

The gay rights group are anxious to vote-out the Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) who voted against legalizing same-sex marriage last September.

Voters will choose new MLCs in the electoral divisions of Nelson, Pembroke and Montgomery.

Flyer displaying statistics on gay and straight life expectancy described as 'hateful and scurrilous' by state electoral commissioner

Over three-thousand flyers displaying statistics showing that gay people have a lower life expectancy than straight people have been distributed in the Tasmanian capital of Hobart ahead of a key gay marriage vote this Saturday.

State electoral commissioner Julian Type described the flyers as 'hateful and scurrilous' and said they could be a breach of the Electoral Act because they are not authorized.

The flyers are not attributed to any particular group or political party, and only have a cryptic email address as a clue to who made them.
