Gay rights groups condemn the threat, saying gay marriage is the ‘right thing to do for a fairer and more equal Scotland’

Politicians are being warned to stop or amend gay marriage legislation in Scotland or they will lose their seat.

Anti-gay lobbying group Scotland for Marriage has said it will use its influence to unseat Members of Scottish Parliament (MSPs) who support equal marriage.

Their efforts are focused on Labour and Scottish National Party (SNP) politicians who voted overwhelmingly in favor of equal marriage last month.

Scottish LGBT rights campaigners and leading politicians have called upon Scotland’s government to publish a timetable for the introduction of a marriage equality bill.

The move comes after the UK House of Commons have voted for marriage equality; with a final vote in the House of Lords expected soon, commentators say Edinburgh is falling behind England and Wales.

Speaking with Gay Star News, Colin McFarlane, director of Stonewall Scotland commented: 'The Commons overwhelmingly voted to extend the legal form of marriage to same-sex couples in England and Wales.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said the Scottish Government should legalize gay marriage, but is now being told she would 'lose more than she would gain'.

Adil Bhatti, former SNP national council member, said: 'The gay community don't have that many votes compared to those that you would lose from the religious groups like the Muslims and the Catholics.

Andrew Walker has left the Scottish National Party (SNP) stating the one of the reasons was Alex Salmond’s, Scotland’s First Minister and party leader, support of gay marriage.

Walker who resigned also resigned from his post as secretary of the SNP branch in the Western Isles, said that the party's and Salmond’s support of marriage equality ignores Scotland’s ‘majority views’.

Gay Straight Alliance is suing far-right SNP Naši after it put them on a ‘blacklist’ of ‘foreign agents’ who are involved in crime and want to break up Serbia

Serbian gay rights campaigners are suing a far-right organization after it claimed they were being indirectly funded by America’s CIA.

The Serbian National Movement Naši (SNP Naši; Naši means ‘ours’ in English) put Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) on a ‘blacklist’ of ‘foreign agents’.

The on-going hate campaign peaked on 13 January when they displayed posters in public spaces in several Serbian cities, naming those on the blacklist.

Gordon Wilson, who led the Scottish Nationalists in the 1980s, has attacked government plans for marriage equality

A former Scottish National Party leader has attacked plans to introduce gay marriage, calling the legislation ‘a step towards fascism’.

Gordon Wilson, who led the party from 1979 to 1990, told BBC Scotland the consultation showed the public were not in favor of marriage equality.

He added political correctness was now occupying a position ‘to which it has no right’ and when the state moves into legislating on same-sex marriage it becomes ‘a step towards fascism’.

Scotland has confirmed it will legalize gay marriage, becoming the first part of the UK to do so.

A bill on the issue will be brought forward in the country's parliament this September.

Today’s decision (25 July) comes after cabinet members of the Scottish National Party (SNP) government met earlier this month to discuss the measures.

Despite widespread support for a change in the law, there has been fierce opposition from some religious leaders and clerics.

Keep calm and carry on: Equal marriage will happen in Scotland – of that I am confident. Like many people across Scotland and on the twitter-sphere I was disappointed that The Scottish government wasn’t able to make an announcement on Tuesday (17 July) that it would be pressing ahead with a same-sex marriage bill. However it’s important that we look at the bigger picture here and remember who the real enemy is.

Scottish government will announce its desicion by the end of the month. LGBT campaigners criticise the delay

The Scottish government has not announced a decision on same-sex marriage following a cabinet meeting to discuss the issue.

Cabinet members of the Scottish National Party (SNP) government met at the First Minister's official residence at Bute House in Edinburgh to discuss same-sex marriage.

A Scottish government spokesperson said: 'This is an important issue and it is right that cabinet takes the time to get both the principle and the detail of the decision right.'

MSPs pledge support for Marvel Comics' gay marriage issue as government prepares to make a decision on equal marriage law

The Scottish Parliament is backing the wedding of two gay X-Men characters.

Scottish Labour Party MSP Mary Fee lodged a motion, supported by eight of her colleagues, which states that the parliament welcomes the same-sex marriage of Northstar and Kyle in Marvel Comics’ May issue of the Astonishing X-Men series.

The motion also says that the parliament ‘agrees that same-sex marriage should not be restricted to the world of literature and fantasy’.

All major political party youth groups unite in favour of gay and lesbian marriage in Scotland

Same-sex marriage in Scotland is a step closer after 50,000 responded to the government's consultation

More than 50,000 responses have been submitted to the Scottish government's consultation on the introduction of gay marriage.

The governing Scottish National Party's (SNP) ministers support the move but some in the party oppose allowing gay couples to marry. A 'rainbow coalition' of groups including The Equality Network, Amnesty International, Unison and the Humanist Society of Scotland all filed submissions supporting changing the law.
