Britain's most senior Catholic, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, is now refusing to talk to Scottish ministers in protest about their plans for gay marriage equality.

According to the BBC, the cardinal made this decision following the Scottish government support for the introduction of same-sex marriage and ahead of the resumption of parliamentary session in September.

Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond has rejected a call to make an early pledge that Scotland will legalise gay marriage.

Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie asked Scottish National Party leader Salmond during First Minister’s Questions whether he would confirm the country would bring in marriage equality.

In reply, Salmond said the matter had to be dealt with ‘sensitively and properly’. He added a consultation was still continuing.

Extremist Christians lobby First Minister Alex Salmond against equal same-sex marriage plans

Evangelical church ministers are urging First Minister Alex Salmond not to allow gay couples to marry in Scotland.

They are handing over a letter on Thursday (15 December) at St Andrew's House in Edinburgh asking Mr Salmond to support the current definition of marriage.

Same-sex couples can enter a civil partnership which carries full legal rights but the ceremony cannot be conducted in a place of worship.
