An officer with the Salt Lake City Police Department has been put on paid administrative leave for reportedly refusing an assignment to work during the weekend’s gay pride parade.

Some 30 officers are scheduled to direct traffic control and provide security for the 120-entry parade on Sunday, and the officer in question would likely be involved in that capacity, according to media reports.

In the week since a federal judge ruled that the state's gay marriage ban is unconstitutional, nearly 1,000 same-sex couples have obtained marriage licenses, according to the Salt Lake City Tribune.

David Phan had been suspended on the day he killed himself

When Phuong Tran was called to her son's middle school in Utah last month, she says school officials did not provide her with any details of why they were suspending David Tran for the day.

'I asked [the principal] why he was suspending my son,' Tran tells the Salt Lake City Tribune. 'He told me: ‘We will discuss on Tuesday.''

But it would soon be too late for that.
