First traditional same-sex Zulu marriage in South Africa

Tshepo Modisane and Thoba Sithole, both 27, married in front of 200 guests. Now they want to have children

What is believed to be the first traditional African gay wedding took place in KwaDukuza, South Africa, on the weekend.

Tshepo Modisane and Thoba Sithole, both 27 years old, married in front of 200 guests at the Stanger Siva Sungam community hall, fully dressed in traditional costumes and following a Zulu rite.

Gay marriage has been legal in South Africa since 2006 and the country is generally considered to be the most advanced in the continent on LGBT issues, despite widespread discrimination and violence against gay and trans people.

Scotland unveils draft gay marriage bill

Scotland makes history by becoming the first part of the United Kingdom to publish legislation to allow same-sex marriage

The Scottish government launched the ‘Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill’, which will introduce marriage equality, yesterday (12 December) alongside a 14-week consultation on its implementation.

The draft legislation will allow same-sex marriage in Scotland and give all religious and belief bodies (for example Humanist) the right to conduct same-sex marriages, if they wish to do so.

The bill will also remove the requirement on a married or civil partnered transgender person to divorce before obtaining full Gender Recognition.

Uruguay recognizes its first foreign gay marriage

Uruguayan lawmakers say it's a 'paradox' to ban same-sex marriages at home but recognize them if conducted abroad
 

An Uruguayan judge has legally recognized a gay marriage conducted overseas.

The ruling grants the binational Spanish and Uruguayan couple, married in Spain in 2010, the same rights and responsibilities as heterosexual couples in Uruguay. 

This case sets a unique precedent for the country's marriage laws since gay marriage, though legal is Spain since 2005, is still not legal in Uruguay.
