Toni Atkins succeeds John Perez who was the first openly gay man in the powerful leadership role

The leadership of the California Assembly will be handed off from a gay man to a lesbian at the end of 2014.

Toni Atkins, a Democrat from San Diego who is currently Assembly Majority Leader, has been chosen by her colleagues to succeed current speaker John Perez who has been termed out.

I am humbled, grateful, and ready to get to work,' Atkins said in a statement Wednesday (22 January).

Dwayne Wynn feels lucky to be alive.

The San Diego man was beaten with a baseball bat by a group of men who he says randomly attacked him because he is gay.

The attack on Sunday (22 December) occurred in the city's gay neighborhood of Hillcrest and left Wynn with a broken eye socket, three cracked ribs and fractured fingers.

Security footage showed men fondling each other and involving their victim in their sex acts – she was unable to communicate but fully aware

Two male nurses are accused of performing sex acts with each beside a 98-year-old female patient’s bed – and even involving her.

Security camera video from the patient’s home in San Diego shows the men masturbating and fondling each other. In one, one of the men puts the patient’s hand on his crotch. He also leans over to kiss the woman, XETV reported.

The 98-year-old victim who was unable to speak or move her hands after a stroke. However, she was fully aware of what is happening.

Just last month, a Home Depot store in Salt Lake City got all kinds of attention when a video of a man proposing to his boyfriend in the lumber section amid a flash mob went viral.

Now the world's larget home improvement retailer is getting attention of a different sort.

A former employee is suing the company for $100,000 alleging he was fired from his job at a San Diego, California, store because he is gay.

95-year-old World War II veteran John Banvard has married 67-year-old Vietnam veteran Gerard Nadeau - his partner of 20 years - at a San Diego seniors home

A Chula Vista, San Diego military seniors home saw its first ever same-sex marriage on Thursday when residents John Banvard and Gerard Nadeau tied the knot.

Banvard, 95, and Nadeau, 67, decided to get married after 20 years of living together after the US Supreme Court upheld the striking down of California’s Prop 8 ban on same-sex couples getting married.

‘We were waiting on the Supreme Court to make that decision,’ Banvard told Fox5 San Diego.

A gay couple found out dreams really do come true as they got engaged at a Broadway show.

Taking to the stage of Tony award-nominated Cinderella, Jason thought he had won a contest allowing him to make his musical debut.

His boyfriend Kunal had an ulterior motive, and announced the 'whole contest was actually a pretence' as he took the mic.

‘We’ve been together for two years, and that’s been the best time of my life,' the San Diego groom-to-be started in his heartfelt monologue.

‘As they say: “love only comes once in a life".'

'Our objective is to provide our citizens with a fully functioning city government with ethics, integrity and transparency,' Gloria said at a news conference.

 Ernest Dronenburg had insisted that the marriages were still illegal

The clerk of San Diego County has abandoned his effort to get the California Supreme Court to halt same-sex marriages in the state.

Clerk Ernest Dronenburg Jr. is dropping his case because it is similar to one filed first by Dennis Hollingsworth and others who backed Proposition 8, the ballot initiative in 2008 passed by voters to outlaw gay marriage in California.

'Because I am dropping my action, the California Supreme Court can start tomorrow in making a decision in the lead case of Hollingsworth v. O’Connell and Brown,' Dronenburg stated.

San Diego County Clerk says he filed to stop marriages in order to obtain legal clarity

The California Supreme Court has denied a request by the clerk of San Diego County to immediately halt same-sex marriages in the state.

The denial on Tuesday (23 July) comes eight days after the same court denied a similar request made by backers of Proposition 8, the ballot initiative in 2008 passed by voters to outlaw gay marriage in California.

Clerk Ernest Dronenburg Jr. had argued that county clerks in the state were not legally bound by Governor Jerry Brown and Attorney General Kamala Harris orders last month that they marry gay couples.

British actor Andrew Garfield has backtracked on his call for a gay Spiderman at San Diego Comic Con, calling it ‘illogical’.

The new Marvel hero actor caused a stir when he suggested bringing in a new love interest for Peter Parker.

He said there was no reason MJ, played by Kirsten Dunst in the Tobey Maguire Spiderman movies, shouldn’t be played by Michael B Jordan, famous for appearing in The Wire.

The clerk of San Diego County is asking the California Supreme Court to halt same-sex marriages in the state insisting that they are still illegal.

Clerk Ernest Dronenburg Jr. filed a petition Friday (19 July) arguing that county clerks in the state are not legally bound by Governor Jerry Brown and Attorney General Kamala Harris orders that they marry gay couples.

On Monday, the state Supreme Court turned down a similar request made by backers of Proposition 8, the ballot initiative in 2008 passed by voters to outlaw gay marriage in California.

Calls for boycott of military science fiction film over the anti-gay views of its author Orson Scott Card are misguided according to its star and its director

Hollywood actor Harrison Ford has said his new film Ender's Game is not homophobic, saying the views of anti-gay author Orson Scott Card are 'completely separate' from the movie.

The actor was responding to the launch of a website Skip Ender’s Game by US activist group Geeks Out, which urges movie goers to boycott the film and avoid giving money to its author.

Card is a board member of the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage and has called for gay sex to be criminalized.

But Ford stressed the film does not address gay people at all.

A few days after the US Supreme Court ruled against the Defense of Marriage Act, the Navy granted permission for active duty members to wear uniforms in the San Diego Gay Pride parade.

The parade in the California city, home of the largest Navy base on the US west coast, will be held on 13 July.
