Behind the Candelabra, the critically-acclaimed and highly-rated HBO film about Liberace, won the Critics Choice Television Award on Monday (10 June) for best movie or miniseries.

The film's leading man, Michael Douglas, also won the award for best actor in a movie or miniseries over the field that included his co-star Matt Damon who played Liberace's lover Scott Thorson in the film.

The awards were presented at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and are voted on by the 86 members of the Broadcast Television Journalist Association.

Scott Thorson claims he and Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, were boyfriends.

Liberace's chauffeur allegedly met Jackson in the late 1970s. Their relationship started when the pop star was about to release his sixth studio album.

'It was right around the time Thriller was coming out and Michael and I became lovers,' Thorson said in an interview with The Sun.

Thorson insists Jackson was attentive in the seven year romance.

Behind the Candelabra, the critically-acclaimed film about Liberace and his much-younger lover, scored big ratings for pay cable network HBO over the weekend.

The film premiered on Sunday (26 May) to 2.4 million viewers making it the most-watched debut for an HBO Films movie since 2004's Something the Lord Made starring Alan Rickman and Mos Def film.

Liberace, who died in 1987 from complications from AIDS, never publicly admitted to being gay during his lifetime.

His former lover Scott Thorson - whose memoir the film Behind the Candelabra is based - is sharing details of some of the lengths the late entertainer went through to remain closeted.

Oscar winning director Steven Soderbergh said Friday (4 January)  that he was 'stunned' when every single major Hollywood studio passed on making his movie Behind the Candelabra which will air on HBO this spring.
