Media tycoon and former Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi has come out in support for gay rights.

Following a series of homophobic gaffes, one of the most powerful people in the world said everyone should be responsible for ensuring LGBTI people have equal rights.

‘The [fight] for civil rights for homosexuals is a fight that in a truly modern and democratic country should be everyone's responsibility,’ Berlusconi said, according to La Repubblica.

An Italian regional assembly has passed a resolution to protect and host Russian gay refugees escaping from their country because of the new anti-gay laws.

The left-wing Emilia Romagna assembly has voted the bill thanks to the Partito Democratico and Italia dei Valori (Italy of Values) parties.

Now the region, one of the most gay-friendly in Italy, will accept Russian LGBT people wanting to change their lives.

Italy's Chamber of Deputies (lower house) began debating a bill that would criminalize homophobia this afternoon.

Yesterday the bill was given approval to be debated and voted on by a parliamentary commission, with support from Prime Minister Enrico Letta's center-left Democratic Party (PD), center-right People of Freedom (PdL) party and the Left Ecology Freedom party (SEL), Ansa reports.

An Italian local councillor, who made headlines for a gay slur last week, has decided to run for the primaries of PDL, former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s party.

Andrea di Pietro, councillor for Popolo delle Libertà in Vigevano, in the northern region of Lombardy, attacked Puglia’s governor Nichi Vendola, one of the few openly gay Italian politicians.

‘Vendola is as unctuous as the lubricant he uses,’ Di Pietro tweeted, launching a debate on the homophobia of the right-wing Italian politicians.

An Italian politician has launched an unprecedented attack against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens of the Mediterranean country.

Romano La Russa, the secretary of security for the Lombardy region, said: ‘Gays are ill. If everyone becomes gay, our society will disappear. We need couples made of men and women: only straight couples can procreate.’

La Russa is also the brother of the former national defense secretary Ignazio La Russa. Both are in the PDL party, the movement founded by the former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
