Chaz Bono is working on becoming nearly half the man he used to be.

The former Dancing With the Stars contestant, who was tipping the scales at 250 pounds last year, has embarked on a weight loss journey.

'I've been sticking to a really strict diet,' Bono, 43, says in the new issue of People magazine. 'It's not any type of starvation thing. I'm just cutting out a lot of stuff and eating primarily protein and vegetables and fruit.'

Chaz Bono, the transgender son of Cher and the late Sonny Bono, is in Toronto this week filming a guest spot on the long-running teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Bono will play himself on the episode to air this fall. He will have a scene with the transgender character of Adam Torres (portrayed by Jordan Todosey).

During an appearance on CBS's The Talk on Tuesday (19 June), comic Adam Carolla insisted that he has to say something 'horrible' about Chaz Bono because being nice wouldn't get him any laughs.

Carolla was confronted by co-host Sara Gilbert about seemingly anti-gay comments he has made in the past. Gilbert, who is a lesbian, acknowledged that he had also spoken out against homophobia.

'Just to set the record straight, how do you feel about us gay people?' she asked.

Chaz Bono is a single man for the first time in his life and it's taking some getting used to.

'I'm not the most outgoing fella,' he told CNN's Piers Morgan in an interview Thursday (7 June). 'I'm not one of those guys who can just walk up and start chatting up a girl that I find attractive.'

Bono split from fiance Jennifer Ella last December. They had been together since 1999, initially as a lesbian couple. Elia has described herself as a bisexual.

She talked about how Chaz 'meant the world' to his dad, the late Sonny Bono, who she said was 'watching from heaven.'

'Chaz had the courage to follow his heart and his convictions and that's what true leaders do,' Bono Mack said.

Then, after a video presentation about Chaz, a woman wearing a dramatic afro wig  a wig came onto the stage unannounced.

Bono, the only child of Cher and the late Sonny Bono, was a popular contestant on ABC's Dancing With the Stars last fall and in a pair of recent documentaries chronicled his transition from a female named Chastity to a man named Chaz.
