Fan Popo discusses the obstacles to LGBT filmmaking and activism in China at Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival in India

Chinese filmmaker Fan Popo said his government is 'homophobic' during an appearance at Kashish, Mumbai International Queer Film Festival in India this week.

'The Chinese government is homophobic, and they do not let queer films be screened in theaters,' said Fan, Hindustan Times reports.

'We have to screen films in small cafes, and even then police often stop screenings. LGBT groups are all underground.'

Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival director Sridhar Rangayan, openly gay filmmaker Onir, director Karan Johar and actors Randeep Hooda and Saqib Saleem were guests on the show, broadcasting tonight at 8.30pm.

The guests discuss the recently released Bombay Talkies, an anthology of four short films including one, directed by Johar about a gay relationship.

Iris director Berwyn Rowlands says he is delighted to join the acclaimed representatives of LGBT film at the Kashish festival in Mumbai

India’s premier LGBT film festival has invited the director of Cardiff’s Iris Prize festival to take part in judging this year’s films.

Berwyn Rowlands will sit on the five strong jury at Kashish – also known as the Mumbai Queer Film Festival. It will be held from 22 to 26 May.

People unmasked and balloons released in a symbolic ‘Indian Coming Out Day’

Bangalore celebrated the third anniversary of the high court ruling that decriminalized homosexual sex in India yesterday.

Over 60 people gathered around the Edward VII statue in Cubbon Park, Bangalore to remove masks and attach them to balloons to symbolize the public unmasking of gay people in India since the historic ruling.

The event was organized by Bangalore LGBT group Mist as a symbolic ‘Indian Coming Out Day’.

Gay filmmaker Sridhar Rangayan is seeking crowd-funding for his documentary about the repeal of the Section 377, the Indian law that criminalized homosexual sex.

After a long campaign by LGBT groups, the law was repealed by Delhi High Court on 2 July 2009, but that decision is currently being challenged in the Supreme Court.

India’s biggest international queer film festival is asking ‘everyone’ to help design its official poster, amid an ongoing court case to repeal gay sex, and give an expression to the LGBT community.

The winning design will be featured as hoardings, print and online advertisements, catalogue cover, banners, cinema slides and delegate cards for KASHISH 2012. The awards include an award plaque, a copy of the poster, an official T-shirt and a guest pass for all the events from 23 to 27 May in Mumbai.
